of objects in the Self alone and experiencing itas uncontaminated as the sky.”(38)For the one who’s abandoned the quest for object happiness, is"peaceful of heart, calm of mind, and desirous of Liberation," 100 theknowledge enshrined here outlines the subtle experiment that will dispel theconfusion caused by the long-standing association of the Self with itsinstruments. The “merger” referred to in this verse is accomplished by withdrawingattention from the thoughts in the mind, the objects. The state of deep sleep, which is a fitting, if provocative, symbol of enlightenment, is only accessiblewhen one’s thoughts and feelings (“ the objects” and, of course, thethinker/feeler ego,) have been “merged” or dissolved into sleep. Thismeditation might be accurately described as waking “sleep.”The “merger” in sleep is a letting go of the thoughts and feelingskeeping the Subtle Body active. As long as the waking ego is obsessing andruminating on the day’s experiences or worrying about tomorrow, sleep willnot come. Similarly, in meditation, the Self is not experienced as long asone’s attention is fixed on the mind. 101“When the discriminator transcendsthe relative plane and realizes the Self,he or she “becomes” the Selfand should cease to identifywith all objects.”(39)Successful meditation dissolves the meditating ego into the state ofpure Seeing, a state free of the belief that the subject and objects areobjectively real. 102 In this state everything is perceived as equal in value toeverything else - which means that there is no tendency for or against actingout whatever vasanas bubble up from the Causal Body This is whyenlightenment or Self realization is called liberation. 103100 Verse 1101 No experience actually takes place in the outside world. The “world” is only the mind. All one’srelationships are only relationships with the thoughts and feelings, perceptions and memories in the mind.102 Seeing from the Self as the Self does not create a different perception or experience in the mind. It onlychanges the knowledge one has about the meaning of the perceptions and experiences.103 Freedom or “moksha.”76
