3841931 SUNBEAM 493CC MODEL 9Registration no. VO 5775Frame no. D9954Engine no. LL 4813Arguably, the Marston Sunbeam was Britain’s best-finishedmotorcycle, the quality of manufacture having been compared tothat of a Rolls-Royce long before Brough made the same boast.Sunbeam’s Model 9 was a light, fast and good-looking ‘500, of whichthe modified ‘90 versions secured Sunbeam victories in innumerableraces both in flat- and saddle-tank variants. Still to this day, a Model9 can be a revelation to riders of more modern, machines. It issaid that old Sunbeam hands never took to the Webb-style girderfork which replaced the traditional side-spring Druids for the 1931season. Be that as it may, the Webbs gave undeniably better steeringand more fluid handling to Sunbeam’s fastest of machines. VO 5775was given the full treatment in 2007-8 with a re-bore, hi-compressionpiston, clutch plates and new mains and big-end. A chassisoverhaul also took place with chains, brakes, damper discs andtyres and tubes replaced together with attention to the front forks, accompanying a full re-spray. The result is a machine which has wona first place at Weymouth as well as other prizes. Having completeda mere 1,500 or so satisfactory miles up to 2012, the machine isoffered with V5C and old MOT documents. This example of perhapsSunbeam’s finest model will require the usual safety checks andrecommissioning before returning to the road.£8,500 - 9,500€12,000 - 13,0003851937 SUNBEAM 247CC 250 SERIES 2Registration no. 519 XUHFrame no. 23966Engine no. 23315Unknown to the workforce at John Marston Ltd., by 1937 thecompany had begun the process of selling their two-wheelerbusiness to A.M.C. of London, the Wolverhampton factory turningover to defence work. Since then both wheels have been powder-coated andfitted with new tyres, tubes and brake internals. In addition, newsteering and suspension damper discs, new cables and seathave been added. The vendor advises the machine is in goodrunning condition and has completed some 500 or so miles sincecompletion.
