2741959 Norton 490cc ES2Registration no. XSL 565Frame no. N4 78347Engine no. 78346Introduced at the 1927 Motor Cycle Show, the ES2 sports roadsterused the Model 18’s overhead-valve engine in the cradle frame ofthe overhead-camshaft CS1, and from then onwards the ‘ES2’designation was always applied to Norton’s top-of-the-rangeoverhead-valve single. The ES2 was built in several versions duringa production run lasting until 1963, though the engine dimensions of79x100mm bore/stroke - first adopted by James Lansdowne Nortonin 1911 - remained unchanged to the end. Post-war developmentsincluded the adoption of an alloy cylinder head (1955), swinging-armrear suspension (1957), alternator electrics (1959) and the slimlineversion of the Featherbed frame that same year. Production ofall of Norton’s traditional singles ended in 1963, though the ‘ES2’designation was later applied to a re-badged Matchless. This examplewas purchased as an incomplete auction lot (frame, engine, hubs, etc)by the vendor’s late father-in-law and rebuilt by him, the work beingcarried out at least 15 years ago. Registered on an age-related platein 2001, the Norton was last MoT’d in 2002/2003 and has not beenused since then, though the engine has been turned over occasionallyto keep the piston free. Offered in need of re-commissioning and soldstrictly as viewed, the machine comes with Norton Owners Club datingletter, two expired MoTs and a V5C document.£2,000 - 2,500€2,800 - 3,5002751953 Velocette 349cc MACRegistration no. NNX 998Frame no. RS 2081Engine no. 18648In 1933 Veloce Limited augmented its established range of overheadcamshaftmodels with an overhead-valve 250: the MOV. Thenewcomer’s engine was a ‘high camshaft’ design with enclosedvalves, and the compact and sprightly machine featured a four-speedgearbox incorporating the company’s new foot-change mechanism. The following year an overhead-valve 350 built along MOV linesappeared. This was the long-stroke MAC, which was subsequentlybored out to create the 500cc MSS. Post-war, the trio of overheadvalveVelos continued much as before with rigid frames and - initially -Webb girder forks. The MAC gained an alloy cylinder barrel and ‘headfor 1951, as well as Velocette’s own telescopic front fork in place of theprevious Dowty, and was further updated with a swinging-arm framein 1953. This MAC had already been restored when it was purchasedby the current vendor’s late father-in-law in the early 90’s. Since then, the engine has been run occasionally. The current owner has notattempted to start the engine but has turned it over to keep the pistonfree. Offered in need of re-commissioning and sold strictly as viewed, the machine is offered with DVLC letter, two old MoTs (most recentexpired 1997), V5C document and its original logbook recording anengine number different from that shown above, indicating that the unithas been changed at some time.£2,800 - 3,200€3,900 - 4,500Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lotprior to bidding.
