FD7 1235Many a mature motorcyclist’s first two-wheeled experience will have beengained aboard a BSA Bantam, a model that was produced in variousforms for over 20 years. The introduction of the first 172cc model - theD5 - for 1958 marked a number of developments, the most important ofwhich were a stronger big-end bearing and improved lubrication. A raisedcompression ratio and larger carburettor increased maximum power to7.4bhp and the top speed to 59mph. Introduced for 1959, successor D7model - known as the Bantam Super - featured the 172cc engine whileboasting a new frame, hydraulically damped front fork, bigger brakesand upswept handlebars. This particular Bantam Super was acquired bythe current owner in April 1995 and restored over the course of the nexttwelve months. Last ridden in 2014, it has covered only some 200 milessince completion and is described by the vendor as in generally goodcondition. The first of the latter wasthe RM4 Automatic, introduced in 1961, while Raleigh first applied the‘Runabout’ name to the RM6, which was built in various versions fromMay 1963 until February 1971 when production of all Raleigh mopedsceased. This apparently original RM6 was in running condition whenpurchased by the current vendor at an auction approximately eight yearsago, since when it has not been used. S2092In 1953 Royal Enfield returned to the 250cc class with a new model:the Clipper. This quarter-litre roadster was obviously out of the samemould as its larger siblings, featuring a cast-iron engine top-end,oil tank integral with the alloy crankcase, and a separate gearbox,the ensemble being housed in scaled down version of the Bullet’sswinging-arm frame. Alternator electrics and coil ignition were newdepartures, however. Introduced alongside it was a cheaper version,the ‘S’, which used the new engine in the rigid frame of the 350ccModel G. The ‘S’ was dropped from the range in 1954, making it oneof the rarest of post-war Enfields. Acquired by the vendor circa 2009and kept in dry storage, this ‘S’ was completely restored in 2014 andis described as in generally excellent condition.
