309Property of a deceased’s estate1939 Triumph 498cc Tiger 100Registration no. 374 UYEFrame no. TF2741Engine no. 9 T100 23097Although Edward Turner’s Triumph Speed Twin caused a sensationwhen it appeared at the 1937 Motorcycle Show, few of its admirerscan have guessed how influential the design would prove to be. True, there had been vertical twins before; indeed, Turner’s predecessorat Triumph - Val Page - had designed one a few years previously, but the Coventry firm’s newcomer established a formula that wouldbe adopted by all of Britain’s major motorcycle manufacturersin the succeeding decade. And whereas previous vertical twinshad suffered from excess bulk, Turner’s was lighter and narroweracross the crankcase than the contemporary single-cylinder Tiger90, whose cycle parts it shared, and from certain angles lookedjust like a twin-port single. This was just what the conservativelyminded motorcycling public wanted and the Speed Twin provedan enormous success for Triumph, lifting the company out of theeconomic doldrums and setting it on the road to future prosperity.Performance proved exemplary for a road-going 500, around 85mphbeing attainable by the Speed Twin while the Tiger 100 sports versionwas even faster. The Tiger 100 was launched in 1938. Performance was boosted bythe use of high-compression forged pistons and polished ports andinternals, the result being a machine that could touch 100mph inroad trim and exceed it with the silencer end-caps removed. Whenproduction resumed in 1946, the T100 reappeared with telescopicforks in place of the original girders, and separate dynamo andmagneto instead of the pre-war version’s magdyno. This pre-war Tiger 100 was first registered to its late owner in August2011. The machine was purchased from one Richard Allen havingpreviously been displayed in a Belgian museum inside a glass case(receipt on file). Additional accompanying documentation consistsof SORN paperwork, VMCC dating certificate, V5C registrationdocument and an MoT certificate (expired July 2012).£10,000 - 16,000€14,000 - 22,000Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lotprior to bidding.
