237 N1927 Magnat-Debon 4hp BMS SportFrame no. 49876Engine no. 61870MBusiness partners Joseph Magnat and Louis Debon first cametogether in the 1890s, setting up a bicycle factory in their hometownof Grenoble. Using a De Dion Bouton engine, the firm built its firstmotorcycle in 1902. By 1905, when the first volume-produced modelswere offered for sale, Magnat-Debon was building its own power units. Its motorcycles incorporated many innovative features, such as atelescopic front suspension and overhead valves, and Magnat-Debonprospered in the years leading up to WWI, becoming synonymouswith quality and prestige. However, both founders died in 1918 andin the early 1920s Magnat-Debon was sold to entrepreneur AlfredTurpillot, who merged the company with Terrot, another of his recentacquisitions. From 1922 onward, the models became rather similarwith only slight difference to justify the different commercial names. This “Type HS 4CV” (350cc) sidevalve-engined Magnat-Debon is thusthe twin sister of a Terrot “BMS – 4HP Sport”. It was sold new in Wien(Vienna) Austria as evidenced by the plaque on the headstock. Aftermany years off the road, the machine was discovered in Hungary andrestored circa ten years ago. We are advised that it is in generally goodorder and a good runner, with a distinctly sporting character. There areno documents with this Lot.£5,000 - 6,500€7,000 - 9,1002381926 Sunbeam 596cc 4¼hp Model 7Registration no. TR 2055Frame no. 17819Engine no. 20361Proud of their founding in 1790, John Marston Ltd., originally ‘sheetmetalworkers and japanners’, made England’s finest bicycles from1887 before car manufacture in 1900 and motorcycle production from1912. Competition awards for their 2¾hp and 3½hp singles swiftlyfollowed. Always renowned for the quality of their build and finishand, thus, expensive, their First War production was largely limited tothe 3½hp and a military ‘600’ for the French Army, developed postwarinto the powerful 4¼hp ‘Model 7’. Being perhaps Sunbeam’smost characteristic model and one which was to stay in productionin footboard ‘flat-tanker’ form until 1932, the un-burstable ‘Model7’ attracted a fiercely loyal following amongst riders who frequentlykept them ‘for life’. Usually with heavy, leaf-spring, forks, it couldbe specified, as here, with Sunbeam’s lighter side-spring girders.Discovered intact and still with its original owner, in 1976, this examplewas very well-restored before museum display. In the vendor’senthusiastic hands since a Brooks auction in 1998, further restorationand recent documented engine work have been carried out, theSunbeam being a much regretted sale. Naturally complete with a V5C,its original instruction book, letters, bills and instruction papers, thislovely Sunbeam is ready for the road, subject to the normal checks. It will, of course, be greatly welcomed at both VMCC and MSCRSunbeam events.£7,000 - 10,000€9,800 - 14,000Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lotprior to bidding. All lots are sold “as is/where is” with all defects and faults.motorcycles | 35
