FTD Respiratory pathogens 21 plus version 5/ March 2012 english FTD Respiratory pathogens 21 plus Mpneu is a small bacterium in the class Mollicutes. Mpneu is a common cause of upper respiratory tract infections with fever, cough, malaise, and headache. It may lead to tracheobronchitis with fever and nonproductive cough: radiologically confirmed pneumonia develops in 5-10 % of cases; rare extrapulmonary syndromes, including cardiologic, neurologic, and dermatologic findings. The transmission is by person-to-person contact with respiratory secretions. Incubation period is 1 to 4 weeks. Cpneu is a species of Chlamydophila that infects humans and is the major cause of pneumonia. Cpneu is typically acquired by otherwise healthy people and is a form of community-acquired pneumonia. Because treatment is different from historically recognized causes such as Spneu, pneumonia caused by Cpneu is categorized as an “atypical pneumonia”. HIB belongs to the encapsulated strains, which were classified on the basis of their distinct capsular antigens. The pathogenesis of H. influenzae infections is not completely understood, although the presence of the capsule in encapsulated type b causes conditions such as epiglottis is known to be a major factor in virulence. Their capsule allows them to resist phagocytosis and complementmediated lysis in the non–immune host. Vaccination with HIB conjugate vaccine is effective in preventing HIB infection. In infants and young children in developing countries where vaccine is not widely used HIB causes bacteremia, pneumonia and acute bacterial meningitis. Saur is the most common cause of staph infections. It is a spherical bacterium, frequently part of the skin flora found in the nose, in the throat and on the skin. About 20 % of the population are long-term carriers of Saur. It can cause a range of illnesses from minor skin infection, such as pimples, impetigo, boils etc. to life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, toxic shock syndrome, bacteremia and septicemia. Spneu or Pneumococcus is Gram-positive, alpha-hemolytic, bile soluble aerotolerant anaerobe bacteria. The organism causes many types of pneumococcal infection other than pneumonia, including acute sinusitis, otitis media, meningitis, bacteremia, sepsis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, peritonitis, pericarditis, cellulitis and brain abscess. Spneu is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in adults and children. - 6 -
