The Next Steps on your JourneyOnce you have completed your induction course there are six overview courses that werecommend. Completing these will give you a very good understanding of the roles andresponsibilities of a governor and the governing body. These overview sessions are also usefulas refreshers for experienced governors.Once you have completed all six courses you will be awarded a Certificate of SchoolGovernance Studies which recognises your contribution and commitment. Completing thesecourses will give you a really good understanding of the roles and responsibilities of governorswhich help you add value to the work of your governing body. When you sign up for yourInduction we will send you further details with your course booking reminders.1) Overview of the CurriculumAfter this session you will be able to:• understand the statutory requirements for curriculum provision• have an awareness of recent initiatives that have impacted on the curriculum• consider the potential impact of forthcoming changes to the curriculum• recognise the governing body’s curriculum responsibilities and your role within this2) Overview of Promoting the Wellbeing of PupilsAfter this session you will be able to:• understand the school’s role in the wellbeing of pupils• consider how governors can monitor the impact of their school’s actions• be aware of national policies that contribute to pupil wellbeing3) Overview of Finance and PersonnelAfter this session you will be able to:• have an overview of the financial and personnel framework• have a better understanding of the governing body’s responsibilities• have an awareness of legislation and key policies relating to finance and personnelThis course can also be tailored to take into account the additional responsibilities thatgovernors have when associated with an academy.4) Overview of Monitoring & EvaluationAfter this session you will be able to:• understand the importance of governing body participation in monitoring and evaluation• understand the different ways governors can monitor in school• understand the key questions that governors need to ask• ensure that governors’ visits are effective and have a positive impact on the school10 Email: schools-ld@essex.gov.uk
