Your Journey to Effective LeadershipThe courses in this section support the leadership role that chair of governors, clerks andtraining link governors have in contributing to highly effective governance. They will help buildstrong relationships with the headteacher, senior leaders and other governors.Introduction to being a Chair of GovernorsThis two hour session is aimed at any governor who wants to understand the various roles andresponsibilities of the chair of governors. The fast-paced, interactive course will offer you achance to:• explore the different aspects of being the chair, including the importance of developingeffective relationships with the headteacher and other governors• consider some of the practical demands of the role, such as chairing a meeting, setting theagenda and working effectively with the clerk• understand how to take the lead on strategy and accountabilityDeveloping your skills as a Chair on the Governing BodyThis course takes a practical and problem solving approach to the demands of being a chair ofa governing body (including schools with academy status). This course will offer you a chance to:• explore and develop the skills needed to lead and manage the work of a governing body.• develop your confidence and skills and take the chance to share and discuss good practicewith others in the same role.It is aimed at new chairs, prospective chairs and vice-chairs of governing bodies andcommittees as well as experienced chairs who are keen to review their effectiveness in therole will also find this course valuable; alternatively they might want to consider the NationalCollege Chairs’ Development programme which explores the leadership role of the chair ofgovernors in greater depth.Chairs and Clerks working effectively togetherFor best results, we recommend that chairs and clerks attend this course together.
