Your <strong>Clerk</strong>ing JourneyWe recognise <strong>and</strong> highly value <strong>the</strong> professionalism of clerks across <strong>the</strong> county. The Certificateof <strong>Clerk</strong>ing is being introduced this year, to acknowledge <strong>the</strong>ir contribution <strong>and</strong> commitment tolearning <strong>and</strong> <strong>development</strong>.To achieve <strong>the</strong> Certificate, a clerk will need to attend <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clerk</strong>s’ Induction <strong>training</strong> or <strong>the</strong>Refresher for Established <strong>Clerk</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> at least two additional <strong>training</strong> sessions (which caninclude <strong>the</strong> clerks briefing sessions) during <strong>the</strong> school year.<strong>Clerk</strong>s’ InductionThis session can be taken over four evenings or two days <strong>and</strong> will allow delegates tounderst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> key roles of <strong>the</strong> clerk, including:• how to set <strong>the</strong> agenda <strong>and</strong> best practice for writing <strong>the</strong> minutes• <strong>the</strong> administration <strong>and</strong> management of <strong>the</strong> governing body• when, what <strong>and</strong> how to give advice to governors• <strong>the</strong> support available to clerks in <strong>Essex</strong>• Refresher for Established <strong>Clerk</strong>sThis course for experienced clerks has been designed to be lively <strong>and</strong> participative. Theobjectives are:• to refresh your knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>and</strong> responsibilities of <strong>the</strong> clerk to<strong>the</strong> governing body• to review your minute writing skills, taking into account <strong>the</strong> dem<strong>and</strong>s of Ofsted• to consider how to clerk ‘statutory’ meetings• to discuss how to manage tricky situations <strong>and</strong> manage conflict• to consider <strong>the</strong> support available to clerks in <strong>Essex</strong>NEW - <strong>Clerk</strong>ing a Pupil Disciplinary MeetingThis two hour, interactive session gives clerks <strong>the</strong> opportunity to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> currentguidance on pupil discipline <strong>and</strong> exclusions <strong>and</strong> will develop <strong>the</strong>ir skills in <strong>the</strong> following areas:• what procedures to follow before an exclusion meeting, including setting <strong>the</strong> agenda• what takes place during a meeting, with a particular focus on <strong>the</strong> clerk’s role• best practice when writing up <strong>the</strong> minutes• what follow up action should be taken, including how to manage confidential minutes <strong>and</strong>recordsThe course will be run by an experienced facilitator who can offer advice, share best practice<strong>and</strong> guidance, <strong>and</strong> will ensure that clerks are able to approach this important role withconfidence.20 Email: schools-ld@essex.gov.uk
