This session will help you explore what accountability means in your school, <strong>and</strong>how <strong>the</strong> governing body can develop its role as an effective critical friend.Promoting <strong>the</strong> Wellbeing of PupilsThis workshop will provide governors with an underst<strong>and</strong>ing as to what is required to supportschools in promoting <strong>the</strong> physical, mental <strong>and</strong> emotional wellbeing of pupils, including <strong>the</strong>contribution of spiritual, moral, social <strong>and</strong> cultural <strong>development</strong>, PSHE, SEAL <strong>and</strong> HealthySchools.Getting a Head StartAppointing a new headteacher is one of <strong>the</strong> most difficult, <strong>and</strong> most important, decisions agoverning body will need to make. This workshop will explain <strong>the</strong> appointment process <strong>and</strong>give governors a shared underst<strong>and</strong>ing of what <strong>the</strong>y need to be doing before <strong>and</strong> during <strong>the</strong>time <strong>the</strong>y are looking for <strong>the</strong>ir new headteacher.Underst<strong>and</strong>ing Raising Achievement<strong>Governor</strong>s, working with school leaders, are responsible for <strong>the</strong> achievement of all pupils, witha firm focus on disadvantaged children. This session ensures governors can interpret <strong>the</strong>irown school’s performance data, underst<strong>and</strong> how this informs <strong>the</strong> steps that can be taken toimprove, <strong>and</strong> explores with <strong>the</strong> senior leadership team how pupil progress can be monitored.Promoting Equality <strong>and</strong> RespectAll pupils must have ‘an equal <strong>and</strong> fair chance to thrive <strong>and</strong> learn in an atmosphere of respect<strong>and</strong> dignity’ (Ofsted Evaluation Schedule 2012). This workshop will help governors reflecton how well <strong>the</strong> school helps all pupils to fulfil <strong>the</strong>ir potential <strong>and</strong> develop an awareness of,<strong>and</strong> respect towards, diversity.
