TRADE TALKLATEST EURO IV PASSENGER VEHICLEEMISSION CONTROLEuro IV is an European Union (EU) emissions legislative requirement prescribed to vehiclemanufacturers to reduce the emissions created by their vehicles.To meet the stringent requirements set by the EU legislation,vehicle and engine manufacturers have developed new enginedesigns to create lower emissions. These engines require advancedmotor oils not only for the purpose of lubrication but also to suitafter-treatment devices, including NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) Controland Particulate Control systems.Table 1To meet the changes to the engine exhaust systems, the ACEA(European Committee responsible for lubricant classification &specification) has developed a new oil category for vehicles usingnew emission control systems that require low-medium level SAPS(Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous and Sulphur).The ‘C’ category was developed with C1, C2, C3 and C4 aftertreatment compatible engine oils. The C sequences for engine oilsdefine the performance requirements and chemical limits for usein vehicles with DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters).Many OEMs have developed specific oil specifications for usewith their engine and emission systems. These include:VW504.00, VW507.00, MB229.31 and BMW LL04 to name afew.Choosing the Right OilValvoline is at the forefront of oil research and technology andproduces specialised passenger diesel engine oils to suit Euro IVstandards.Valvoline SynPower MST SAE 5W-30 is a full synthetic motoroil designed for use in Euro IV compliant vehicles including thosewith Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs).Valvoline SynPower MSTSAE 5W-30 is a mid SAPSformulation meeting ACEAA3/B4, C3, API SL/CF andMercedes Benz 229.31,229.51 specifications.
