BR-42RULE 2 / OFFICIALS AND THEIR DUTIESSection 3. Elastic PowerArt. 1. The referee shall be empowered to make decisions on any points notspecifically covered in the rules.Section 4. Officials’ JurisdictionArt. 1. The officials shall have the power to make decisions for infractionsof rules committed either within or outside the boundary lines from 30minutes (men) <strong>and</strong> 15 minutes (women) before the scheduled starting timeof the game through the referee’s approval of the final score.Art. 2. For men, at least one official shall arrive on the floor 30 minutesbefore the start of the game.Art. 3. For women, officials may leave the court after the 10-minute markduring pregame <strong>and</strong> return by the three-minute mark.Art. 4. When (men) the referee <strong>and</strong> (women) all three officials leave theconfines of the playing area at the end of the game, the officials’ jurisdictionhas ended <strong>and</strong> the score has been approved.A.R. 3. Team A is ahead by one point. The game-ending horn sounds with the ball looseat the division line. Clearly after playing time has expired, A1 retrieves the ball <strong>and</strong> dunksinto his or her basket. The referee, who is near the free-throw line, on his or her way tothe scorers’ table to check/approve the final score, sees this action by A1 <strong>and</strong> assesses anindirect technical foul. Team A’s coach pushes the referee after the indirect technical foulis called. The referee ejects the coach <strong>and</strong> awards Team B four free throws. RULING:The referee is correct. The officials’ jurisdiction does not end until the approval of thefinal score. Until the officials’ jurisdiction ends, an official may call a technical foul,correct a correctable error (Rule 2-11), or correct a bookkeeping mistake by the officialscorer.A.R. 4. The officials leave the playing area <strong>and</strong> while they are in the locker room, it isdiscovered that there is a mistake in the score or that there was a request for a correctableerror (Rule 2-11). RULING: When the officials leave the playing area, the score hasbeen approved <strong>and</strong> the game is over.Section 5. Officials Use of Replay/Television EquipmentArt. 1. Officials may use official courtside replay equipment, videotapeor television monitoring that is located on a designated courtside table(i.e., within approximately 3 to 12 feet of the playing court), when suchequipment is available only in situations as follows:a. A determination if a fight occurred <strong>and</strong> the individuals whoparticipated or left the bench area;
