Being its primary centre oforigin, India offers a repertoire of genetic diversity that could serve as a valuable resource foridentifying designer genotypes suiting to specific applications.Morphogenetic diversity in Vetiver: A-C. showing diversity forpigmentation and orientation of stigma, D-E. root anatomy depictingendodermis diversity for occurrence of thick casparian strips (cs) oressential oil secretary cells (eo), F. variation in root growth pattern in thetwo genotypes (left : seed forming type with small roots, right : low/lateflowering non-seed forming type with fast growing deep penetrating rootsreaching upto 1.5 M just in one year)In India, the roots of this grass have been traditionally used for essential-oilproduction and its hedges in farm contour protection. Taking cues from itstraditional usage in environmental protection in India and other countries, The World Bank initiated severalprojects in India in 1980s for systematic development of Vetiver Grass Technology, now popularly known asVetiver System (VS). Over a period of time VS has acquired international territories and is now grown in over100 countries owing to its cost effective environment friendly multifarious applications and sustainable solutionsfor soil and water conservation, slope and embankment stabilization, pollution mitigation and land and waterrehabilitation, agroforestry management and host of other ecosystem services. Some of the notable achievementsand impacts of VS applications around the world worth mentioning are: disaster mitigation in Thailand andVietnam, soil and water conservation and wetland restoration in Ethiopia, infrastructure stabilization in China,Congo, Madagascar and Vietnam; pollution control in Indonesia, Australia, California; handicrafts in Venezuela,China, and Thailand; mine reclamation in Venezuela, South Africa, Australia, Chile; river bank, irrigation anddrain stabilization in Vietnam, Zimbabwe, India; and other land and water related uses.Vetiver has wide range of ecological distribution in India. Lately, there has been rejuvenation and added interestin VS applications in India. A national Vetiver workshop was organized in Kochi, Kerala, India in 2008. Vetivercan be seen in its natural state in and around Lucknow - the venue of ICV-5. It is our privilege to hold thisInternational Conference on Vetiver in India, and also offer an opportunity for the participants to see vetiver inaction in its native home. The conference would provide an exciting and startling opportunity to the participants64
to interact with the leading world vetiver users who have hands on and successful experience ; an experience thatcould lead to early follow up application, additional research, and promotion in the participants own countries.Conference ThemeFast growing deep penetrating roots and high biomass production potential of vetiver grass has opened neweropportunities for its utilization in mitigating global warming through photosynthetic capture of atmosphericcarbon and its sequestration in subsoil horizons. Also, the technical advances being made in cellulosicconversion of plant biomass into biofuel could offer integrated approach for optimum utilization of vetiverplantations thereby reducing the load from anthropogenic emissions.VS could mitigate the collateral adverse effects of climate change, such as flood disaster, soil degradation, lossof water quality and quantity (including groundwater), agriculture, and pollution control (water and landdecontamination), and sediment control from roads, mines and other sources that impact basin sediment flows. Objectives• Review of the state of art developments on the prospects and potential of VS in addressing issues relatedto climate change and mitigation of global warming• An update of latest developments on VS applications to underscore its promises and potential in theservice of global community• Overview of Vetiver Ecosystem Services (an integrated ecological approach for betterment ofenvironment, people and community)• Utilization of vetiver diversityAwards“King of Thailand Vetiver Awards”There will be two sets of these awards valued at US $ 10,000 to the best papers on research (US$5,000) anddissemination (US$5,000). Applicants should send their papers to the Selection Committee for the “King ofThailand Vetiver Awards”, Office of the Royal Development Projects Board, 78 Rajdamnern Nok Ave.,Bangkok 10300, Thailand, vetiver@rdpb.mail.go.th “The Vetiver Network International Awards”Awarded to individual or organization in recognition of their contribution to R & D and promotion of VSRegistration Fee(includes conference attendance and related events, mid conference transport, conference documents, and somemeals)For participants from outside India: US$300Accompanying person: US$200Indian Participants: Rs. 6000/-Accompanying person: Rs. 4000/-ParticipantsIt is estimated that approximately 300 participants would attend ICV-5, of which nearly 120 would be fromoutside India and international experts.Accommodation and costThe participants are required to make their own stay arrangement.
