He lovedwhere he lived and he gave generously <strong>to</strong> support <strong>the</strong> organizationsand causes that make <strong>the</strong> region thrive. Mr. McLaughlin and h<strong>is</strong> wifeJean donated millions of dollars <strong>to</strong> local causes during <strong>the</strong>ir lifetimes,and <strong>the</strong>ir spirit of generosity will continue for years <strong>to</strong> come with <strong>the</strong>$10 million endowment Matt and Jean establ<strong>is</strong>hed at The <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong>Foundation. Matt McLaughlin was driven by h<strong>is</strong> belief that he wasblessed and had a responsibility <strong>to</strong> share h<strong>is</strong> good fortune with <strong>the</strong>community he grew <strong>to</strong> love. In 1946, he began h<strong>is</strong> long career in salesand marketing at Ford Mo<strong>to</strong>r Company, r<strong>is</strong>ing in <strong>the</strong> ranks <strong>to</strong> generalmanager of <strong>the</strong> Ford and Lincoln-Mercury div<strong>is</strong>ions. In <strong>the</strong> early 1970s,he was named vice president of Ford’s North American au<strong>to</strong>motiveThe Late Jean and Mat<strong>the</strong>w McLaughlin.operations and marketing staff. After h<strong>is</strong> retirement in 1978, Mr. andMrs. McLaughlin moved from Michigan <strong>to</strong> Rancho Bernardo where <strong>the</strong>y immediately got involved in <strong>the</strong> localcommunity and supported <strong>the</strong> Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation. For <strong>the</strong> next three years, every memberwho joins or renews <strong>the</strong>ir membership in <strong>the</strong> community foundations in 4SRanch-Del Sur, Carlsbad, Escondido,Oceanside and Ramona will revel in <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> match membership grant dollars <strong>to</strong> support <strong>the</strong> region that bothMatt and Jean McLaughlin loved.Mary Holl<strong>is</strong> ClarkMary passed away peacefully in December 2010. She was truly atrailblazer, demonstrating that intelligent and competent women couldcompete equally. Mary followed in her mo<strong>the</strong>r-in-law’s footsteps by divingin<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> social and philanthropic life of her adopted community. In 1988,<strong>the</strong> Mary Holl<strong>is</strong> Clark Desert D<strong>is</strong>covery Lab opened <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> public. In 1996,Mary was given <strong>the</strong> ultimate accolade by <strong>the</strong> naming of a new subspeciesof marsh wren, C<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>thorus palustr<strong>is</strong> clarkae, in her honor. She and herhusband, J. Dallas Clark, who was a founder of The <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> Foundation,received <strong>the</strong> American Association of Museums Medal for D<strong>is</strong>tingu<strong>is</strong>hedPhilanthropy – placing <strong>the</strong> Clarks in company of o<strong>the</strong>r stellar formerrecipients, such as <strong>the</strong> Chase Manhattan Bank, James Michener, HenryLuce, and Paul Mellon. Her generosity of time, talent and treasure <strong>is</strong>The Late Mary Holl<strong>is</strong> Clark.unmatched. Mary had a fund at The Foundation for many years, was amember of The Foundation’s Legacy League and was a guest of The Foundation’s Heart of <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> on Cox Cable.She also sponsored The <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Celebration.72 | The <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> Foundation 2011 Annual Report
