He lovedwhere he lived and he gave generously to support the organizationsand causes that make the region thrive. Mr. McLaughlin and his wifeJean donated millions of dollars to local causes during their lifetimes,and their spirit of generosity will continue for years to come with the$10 million endowment Matt and Jean established at The San DiegoFoundation. Matt McLaughlin was driven by his belief that he wasblessed and had a responsibility to share his good fortune with thecommunity he grew to love. In 1946, he began his long career in salesand marketing at Ford Motor Company, rising in the ranks to generalmanager of the Ford and Lincoln-Mercury divisions. After his retirement in 1978, Mr. andMrs. McLaughlin moved from Michigan to Rancho Bernardo where they immediately got involved in the localcommunity and supported the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation. She was truly atrailblazer, demonstrating that intelligent and competent women couldcompete equally. Mary followed in her mother-in-law’s footsteps by divinginto the social and philanthropic life of her adopted community. In 1988,the Mary Hollis Clark Desert Discovery Lab opened to the public. In 1996,Mary was given the ultimate accolade by the naming of a new subspeciesof marsh wren, Cistothorus palustris clarkae, in her honor. She and herhusband, J. Dallas Clark, who was a founder of The San Diego Foundation,received the American Association of Museums Medal for DistinguishedPhilanthropy – placing the Clarks in company of other stellar formerrecipients, such as the Chase Manhattan Bank, James Michener, HenryLuce, and Paul Mellon.
