DISTRICT ChampsCENTRAL OTAGO2010 and it was the Wanaka GunClub’s turn to host the Central OtagoChampionships. The early morning fog, thanks to the Hawea River system, finallycleared to reveal a clear and sunny day(typical Wanaka weather) Squads wereslow to enter given the early conditionsbut eventualy we got under way with skeetover two fields until our ‘bomb proof’ #1field decided to throw a spanner in theworks! It didn’t seem to worry Sam Gawnwho, shooting skeet in C grade, shot hisfirst skeet possible. All the big players were in town withAustralian, Commonwealth and WorldChampions shooting for the Otago Districttitles. With sun on their backs and no windto speak of the good scores began rollingin.Five possibles in the skeet with LindsayRodgers and Mike Sime fighting it out tothe end after a couple of rounds in theshoot off.Six possibles in the minis with GraemeEde taking to HOA.No possibles in the Double Rise butsix shooters on 19 including LawrenceMcBreen in B grade whittled themselvesdown to a win for Colin WaghornPoints score and five possibles includingWanaka Junior and C grader BrendonMurdoch. The shoot off went for quitesome time and Graeme Ede managed tokeep his cool and outlast the rest.In Single Barrel five A graders, one B andone C grader shot possibles. In the fadinglight Daniel Warnock and David Folley keptsmashing targets with Daniel emergingthe victor after 75 straight.Single Rise and a mountain of possibles(20) All the big names were there and withdelays due to some competitors beingin multiple shoot offs prior to the S/Riseshoot off, we didn’t get underway until5pm (in May). About 50 in and we gotdown to one squad (mainly due to thepoor light) Eventually the car headlightsand spots were turned on and away theywent again seemingly immune to the coldand dark conditions. Congatulations to theguys that hung in there especially to DanielWarnock on his win.Prize giving followed and special thanksmust go to Michael Dobbie who offeredhis assistance to the Wanaka Club in theoffice running the shoot program and toKaren Studholme for her work assistinghim. To the Club members who did whatever needed to be done and to those whopitched in to help reffing and scoring..Thank you all.I took some group photos of theprize winners but they came out verydodgy so I’m not submitting them to theGunshot. Rather I’ll send them to Choir Boymonthly……..I heard some comments toward theend of the day about the time that thingswere taking. In response I’d like to say thatwe had 60 shooters which included someof New Zealand’s best. The program forthe day is one event short of a ProvincialChampionship with a similar number ofcompetitors and one day less to run it. Whensome competitors are in multiple shoot offsthey must be given the time to compete ineach event and not be disavantaged byplaying catch-up 50 targets behind the restof the field. Maybe District Champs needto be held in the summer months to givebetter light conditions? - Cheers 2low8s.Results;Skeet HOA, Lindsay Rodgers. 25 B Walker,M Sime, L Rodgers, T Begg, Sam Gawn.Minis HOA, Graeme Ede. 20 N Kelland,C Waghorn, L Rodgers, D Folley, G Ede, PStudholme.Double Rise HOA, Colin Waghorn. 19B Walker, C Waghorn, M Dobbie, G Ede, AKinimont, L McBreenPoints HOA, Graeme Ede. 75 R Kelly, BWalker, G Ede, P Studholme, B Murdoch.Single Barrel HOA, Daniel Warnock. 25 TCleminson, D Warnock, N Kelland, D Folley,J Munro, K Bonney, S Elliot.Single Rise HOA Daniel Warnock. 25B Waugh, T Sutherland, D Warnock, NKelland, L Sanders, W Darling, M Sime, CWaghorn, L Rodgers, L Maxwell, M Dobbie,Jan Manson, D Folley, Steve Gawn, AWilson, J Munro, P Studholme, S Anglem, LMcBreen, Jeff Manson.High Gun Boston Walker.canterburyCanterbury Clay Target Club hosted theCanterbury District Championships on 13thFebruary 2010 just two weeks prior to theDTL Nationals and a lot of shooters usedthis as an opportunity to have a practicerun for that event.Visitors came from Nelson, West Coastand even from Southland with a squadfrom “The Road”.The weather started out fine butbecame somewhat windy later in themorning making some of the events achallenge to some shooters. The High Gun was won by DanielWarnock, Gorge Road, with Damian Briggswinning the A Grade High Gun.Results:Double Rise HOA - Greg Middleton.A Grade 1st Damian Briggs, 2nd DanielWarnock, 3rd Chris Helem.
