PRESIDENT’S REPORTWelcome to my first officialPresident’s column following myappointment as President in March2010.I have enjoyed an easy ride into takingup the position as President. Trevor hasmade it an easy transition to take overthe reins. I had the opportunity at our lastExecutive meeting to personally thankhim in recognition of his service to themembership, and present him with a “PastPresidents” lapel badge. Trevor forms partof the NZCTA Council in his capacity as PastPresident for the remainder of the year.In my acceptance speech at the NZCTAAGM, I focused on greater Governanceand fewer Management issues being dealtwith by the Executive in the future and theinvolvement of the full membership beingtaken into account, via sub-committees,in the future decision making process andpathway the NZCTA would follow into thefuture. To this end, at our last Executivemeeting, Adrienne’s designation waschanged to “Executive Officer“ toreflect Adrienne’s changing role anddelegated responsibilities, to deal withall Management issues, and free up theExecutive to deal with Governance of theNZCTA moving forward.Consequently the Chairpersons of theNZCTA sub-Committees (school, ISSF, andSporting) attended their first Executivemeeting on the evening prior, and reportedto the full NZCTA Executive the followingmorning at 8am.Many outstanding issues were addressedat this new meeting format, and everybodyfelt it was very worthwhile and a major stepforward in involving sub-committees in thedecision making process. It was recognisedthat any member can now bring freshideas to move the sport forward, in theirparticular discipline, by bringing it to thesub-committees’ attention, and possiblediscussion at Executive level. (Members canrefer to the appropriate contact personnelin the front Executive page of Gunshot orvia the Website.)Recently George Johnston and I hada meeting with a director from “Bike NZ”in Auckland, with a view to gaining morebenefits to our membership, throughpossible restructuring of the NZCTA intoone organisation, of all the Shootingdisciplines, called “Shooting NZ”. Thisidea has been tried twice before, but has never gained traction toproceed. The benefits to membersof the NZCTA are immense if a futureorganisation under one umbrellaemerges from the darkness, with access to GovernmentAgency funding and futuresports development assistance.Members will be familiar withother organisations like Bike NZ,Swimming NZ, Bowls NZ, etc.Following on from extensivediscussion at NZCTA Executivelevel, authority was granted tofloat the idea at an NZSF Symposium heldthe same weekend. The NZCTA Executive floated theidea to the other disciplines of the NZSF(Pistol, Rifle, and Target Shooting NZ) tosuggest exploring the possibility under theumbrella of the NZSF, to form a workingparty of delegates from each discipline. The NZCTA was most emphatic thatchange had to come from the top downand would only be proceeded with if therewere extensive tangible benefits to ourmembers and change would only evolveunder the umbrella of the NZ ShootingFederation as the Government Agencyvehicle for future funding.I will keep everybody informed ofany developments in the future via thiscolumn.Members should familiarise themselveswith the contents of the “Notice to all Clubs”memorandum to review other changesadopted at the last Executive Meeting. There have been some very notablerecent achievements by NZCTA membersof late. Following on from the successfulNZ Glenn Cup team triumphing overAustralia and retaining the trophy at theNZ DTL National Championships, theNZ Skeet Glenn Trophy team has alsosucceeded at the recent Australian NationalChampionships in Wagga. It has been many years (1982) since NZhas held both Glenn Trophies together, and this is attributable to the quality of theselections of our competitive Teams, thoseindividual skills and the organisation of oursport in general. There were other notable individualachievements recently also at theAustralian Skeet Nationals, with TonyTruss winning the Australian NationalSkeet Championship. This follows on fromMiles Browne-Cole winning the AustralianTrench Championship earlier in the Yearand Boston Walker winning the AustralianSingle Barrel Championship. No wonderthe Australian ACTA President told meto leave his trophy cabinet alone, whenI mentioned, the NZCTA Members wereinterested in all the trophies, but wouldleave the stuffed wallaby behind! Thefriendly banter the members of our twogreat countries enjoy with each other isalways very enjoyable, especially when weare on top!A great deal of work has been completedby both the NZCTA and NZSF in getting to astage where athletes have been nominatedfor the forthcoming CommonwealthGames in India. All relevant informationhas been forwarded to the NZOC by theNZSF, and the NZOC Selectors will makethe final decisions for nomination. I amconfident we have done everything wecan to support our athletes to gain futuresuccess. All members wish the successfulnominated athletes every success in thefuture to do our sport proud, and follow inGraeme Ede’s footsteps.Good shooting and above all else havefun!Keith LivingstoneCover photograph: The New Zealand teamthat recaptured the Glenn Trophy at theAustralian Skeet National Championshipsat Wagga Wagga, Australia.
