LawMessage from the Dean: Prof Johan HenningThis competition made it possible for members ofthe Faculty to compete with 177 other universitiesfrom all over the world.The Faculty has been one of the organising in stitutionsof the week-long Cambridge InternationalSymposium on Economic Crime since 1988. TheSymposium is presented annually at the JesusCollege of the University of Cambridge in the UKand is attended by more than 1000 legalists frommore than 100 jurisdictions. At the 24th and 25thsymposiums, the Faculty made decisive contributionsthat added to the success of these events. Four LL Band LL M students and two staff members weremade available to the Secretariat and both theDean, Prof Johan Henning, and the Chairperson ofthe University of the Free State Council, Judge FaanHancke, participated in the 2006 symposium asspeakers and chairpersons of work sessions. ProfHenning delivered three papers at this event symposiumand Judge Hancke one paper. Prof Henningalso participated in the 2007 symposium where hedelivered three papers. Prior to the commencementof the symposiums, Prof Henning delivered a seriesof lectures on International Company Law to LL Mstudents of two leading uni versities in Tokyo,namely Hosei and the Waseda University. All thepapers were published in specialist journals.The Symposium on Violent Crime in SouthAfrica, hosted on the Main Campus in 2007,established closer cooperation between the Facultyof Law, the Centre for Psychology and the Law, theDepartment of Psychology, and the Law Inspectorateof Correctional Institutions. Deliberations betweenthe involved parties resulted in the opening of jailsfor research, which is of particular importance forresearch conducted in the Crime in Highly DiverseSocieties Focus Area of the Strategic AcademicCluster on Transformation in Highly DiverseSocieties.A substantial amount of research went into theTrust Law Seminars presented in 2007 at a numberof venues throughout South Africa, inter alia byAdv Bradley Smith and Prof Willie van derWesthuizen, both from the Department of PrivateLaw. The Seminars focused on the important officeof trustee in South Africa and on how to avoidunintended errors, as well as on an update onrecent important case law, statutory changes andpractice developments.Mr Iain Benson has been appointed as a researchfellow in the Department of Constitutional Law andPhilosophy of Law. He holds degrees from Queen’sUniversity, Cambridge and Windsor in the UnitedKingdom (UK). He has been asked to advise onmany of the important cases dealing with religiousand human rights in recent years in Canada, Ireland,UK and South Africa. In the brief time that MrBenson has been involved with the Faculty he haspublished two articles in accredited journalsregarding freedom of religion and related issues.A result of efforts to elicit team research withacademics elsewhere in the country was the publicationof the collected works of the reformationalphilosopher, HG Stoker, on Compact Disk. Togetherwith academics from Potchefstroom, Prof AndriesRaath, Department of Constitutional Law and Philosophyof Law, assisted in making available Stoker’s99
