Prof Hendri Kroukamp of the Depart ment ofPublic Management received the senior top achieveraward in research in 2007 in the Faculty of Economicand Manage ment Sciences. He is also the Africanrepresentative on the Management Board of theInternational Association of Schools and Institutesof Administration (IASIA; 2006-2007), and theChairperson of the IASIA working group on PublicAdministration Training and Education: AligningMissions and Quality (2007).Prof Maryke Labuschagne (Department ofPlant Sciences) received two prestigious nationalresearch awards in 2008: the National Science andTechnology Forum award for the development ofresearch capacity over the past ten years (for hersuccessful mentoring of black students andresearchers) and the Cereal Science and Technology– SA award for research and development. Togetherwith Profs Wijnand Swart (also of the Departmentof Plant Sciences) and Schalk Louw (Department ofZoology and Entomology), she received the 2007Technology and Human Resources IndustryProgramme (THRIP) excellence award presented bythe national Department of Trade and Industry. Theteam received this award for the commersialisationof kenaf as fibre crop.Prof Kobus Laubscher.Prof Kobus Laubscher, Department of AgriculturalEconomics, is the Chairperson of the NationalProductivity Institute’s (NPI) Social Plan andProductivity Advisory Council, appointed by theMinister of Labour, and the Chairperson of the NPIBoard of Directors (2007).Prof Dave Lubbe of the Centre for Accountingreceived the Stals prize for Economic and Man agementSciences in 2007 for his contribution to thedevelopment of Auditing as a discipline. He is thefirst Chartered Accountant to receive this prize.The recipients of the National Science and TechnologyAwards are, from the left: Prof Jan van der Westhuizen (UFSDepartment of Chemistry), Dr Susan Bonnet (UFS Departmentof Chemistry), Prof Thinus van der Merwe (FARMOVS-PAREXEL), Prof Maryke Labuschagne (UFS Department ofPlant Sciences), and Prof Ken Swart (FARMOVS-PAREXEL).Prof Lochner Marais of the Centre for De velopmentSupport was honoured as the 2005 juniortop achiever in research in the Facul ty of Eco no micand Management Sciences.Ms Elsa Mengsteab, an Eritrean student at theCentre for Development Support, received an awardfor best student in Development Research in 2006.70
