He was also honoured for his contributions inthe fields of law, philosophy and history by theInternational Biographical Centre in Cambridge,United Kingdom.Dr Olihile Sebolai.Prof Jan Smit, Associate Professor at the Departmentof Architecture, received awards for Architecturefrom the Free State Institute of Architectsfor House Enkalweni and House Uys in 2007.Adv Bradley Smith, Senior Lecturer at theDepartment of Private Law, received the Dean’sMedal for the best Master‘s degree in the Faculty ofLaw in 2007.Prof Elizabeth Snyman-Van Deventer, Departmentof Mercantile Law, is a member of theGeographical Naming Committee of the Free State’sDepartment of Sport, Arts and Culture (2007).Mr Jaco Spies, Lecturer at the Department ofFine Arts, received a merit prize at the Absa 1’Atelierart competition in 2007.In 2005, Dr Olihile Sebolai, current Manager:Capacity Building Initiatives of the Directorate ResearchDevelopment, made a ground-breaking discoveryin the field of microbiology by uncovering aseries of new compounds that may in future beused to lubricate man-made nanorobots in 2005.He received the UFS Senate medal and prize for bestMaster‘s student at the University; the Dean’s Medalfor best Master‘s student in the Faculty of Naturaland Agricultural Sciences; the Andries Brink/Sasolprize for the best MSc dissertation in Microbiology;the JP van der Walt prize for best MSc dissertationin yeast science; the Chris Small prize for an outstanding Master‘s dissertation; and honorary coloursfrom the UFS Student Representative Council.Dr Aldo Stroebel.Dr Aldo Stroebel from the InternationalisationOffice and Cen tre for Sustainable Agriculture andRural De ve lop ment is a member of the nationalAgricultural Research for Development Task Team(2005-2007); Vice-President of research and Directorof SARIMA (2006-2007); Coordinator of the NationalProgramme for the Creation of Small Enter prises andJobs in the Second Economy, part of the Acceleratedand Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa, drivenby the Deputy President (2006); and one of only fournon-European Union specialists members of the72
evalua tion panel for the European Union’s rural development strategy (2007).Prof Andries Stulting of the Department ofOphthalmology received a silver award at the 2006Free State Premier’s Excellence Award function foroutstanding excellence and leadership. Prof Stulting’swork also appeared in the 5th edition of the Who’sWho in Medicine and Healthcare (2004/2005), theMadison Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals(2005), and the 23rd edition of Marquis Who’s Whoin the World (2006). He is also an honorary memberof the Tanzanian Optometric Association.Ms Corlietha Swart, Lecturer at the Departmentof Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French, was afinalist of the Sanlam/Passi short stories competitionin 2007 for her short story “Die laaste stasie”.Prof Hendrik Swart of the Department ofPhysics received a National Research Founda tionaward from the Institutional Research Develop mentProgramme for the research niche area (RNA) in thedeveloped RNA cate gory with the highest score.Dr Pieter Taljaard, Lecturer at the Depart ment ofAgricultural Economics, received the award for thebest article published in Agrekon in 2005.Prof Hennie van Coller of the Department ofAfrikaans and Dutch, German and French is theChairperson of the South African Academy forScience and Art (2005).Prof Frans Swanepoel.Prof Frans Swanepoel, Director: Research De velopmentand Extraordinary Professor at the Cen trefor Sustainable Agriculture and Rural De ve lop ment,received a Senior Fulbright Fellow ship in 2007 andhas been appointed as a visiting profes sor at theCornell International Institute for Food, Agricultureand Development at Cornell Uni versity in New York,United States of America.
