Heated Platens Accessory – For Making Thin Films of PolymericSamples for Transmission FTIR AnalysisF E A T U R E S O F T H E H E A T E D P L A T E N S A C C E S S O R Y• Fast, efficient means of making thin films for transmissionspectroscopy• Temperature range – ambient to 300 ºC• Standard stainless steel spacer set (15, 25, 50, 100, 250 and500 microns all with 25 mm ID) included with accessory• Integral design for easy insertion and removal of heatedplatens into the hydraulic press• Included insulating disks to minimize heat loss duringfilm pressing• Standard cooling chamber included with accessoryThe PIKE Heated Platens Accessory is designed to efficientlymake thin films of polymer materials for infrared transmissionspectroscopy. Thin films are easily made from pellets or otherplastic sample forms.Typically a 2–5 milligram portion of polymer is cut from thepellet or other plastic sample and placed between aluminumdisks within the heated base of the platens. The temperature ofthe platens is chosen to match the melting point of the polymermaterial. The top plate of the heated platens accessory is placedover the assembly and the unit is placed into the hydraulic press.A low force (2 tons) is generally applied to the sample in the heatedplatens accessory to make excellent films. The PIKE Heated Platens Accessory includes insulating disksto maintain the desired temperature set point when making thinpolymer films. The insulating disks improve the quality of thinfilms, by making them more IR transmissive and thereby improvingTransmission Spectrum of Thin Film of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)produced from PIKE Heated Platens Accessorythe quality of the spectra produced from the pressed films. This isachieved by holding the temperature at the melting point of thepolymer during the film making process. Flattening the polymerbelow its melting point produces a cloudy film. Pressing thepolymer film when it is above its melting point may causepolymer degradation. The PIKE Heated Platens Accessory is compatible with the PIKECrushIR Hydraulic Press and other hydraulic presses (please inquire).CompositionPIKE Heated Platens AccessoryP A R T N U M B E RO R D E R I N G I N F O R M A T I O ND E S C R I P T I O N181-2000 PIKE Heated Platens AccessoryNotes: The heated platens accessory includes spacer set, thermal insulating disks, cooling chamber, aluminum disks and magnetic film holder.
