The Development & Engineering Center<br />

in <strong>Sevelen</strong> develops innovative solutions<br />

for acoustic, thermal and aerodynamic<br />

The heatshield production center<br />

manufactures products and modules for<br />

efficient thermal management to the highest<br />

standards. One of our core activities<br />

is the manufacture of multifunctional<br />

components, such as acoustic <strong>heatshields</strong>.<br />

UNDERBODY SYSTEMS<br />

In the production center for underbody<br />

systems, we manufacture components<br />

from glass fiber- or natural fiber-reinforced<br />

plastics (thermoplastics), using<br />

the latest technologies. These products<br />

include underbody shields, under-engine<br />

shields, battery trays, spare wheel wells<br />

and covers.<br />

In our Development & Engineering Center,<br />

around 100 specialists develop, test and<br />

optimize new products and solutions in<br />

intensive cooperation with our customers.<br />

Our core competences in vehicle acoustics,<br />

thermal management and aerodynamics,<br />

Our in-depth knowledge and experience of<br />

plastics, fibers, composite materials and<br />

Solutions for<br />

thermal management<br />

The most important functions of thermal<br />

management in motor vehicles today are<br />

to protect sensitive vehicle components<br />

from the effect of heat and to provide<br />

optimal thermal comfort for the occupants.<br />

Increasingly often, we integrate the <strong>heatshields</strong><br />

that find applications here into<br />

multifunctional components according to<br />

the ‘Total Vehicle Approach’. Heatshields<br />

today are for the most part an integral<br />

component of the underbody system,<br />

although they often also provide the key<br />

to the reduction of high temperatures<br />

in the engine compartment. Conversely,<br />

we also make it possible for supplementary<br />

functions, for example acoustic<br />

properties, to be integrated into the<br />

<strong>heatshields</strong> themselves.<br />

<strong>Rieter</strong> is a well-known pioneer in the development<br />

of multifunctional components<br />

<strong>heatshields</strong> with<br />

made-to-measure functions<br />

<strong>Rieter</strong> in <strong>Sevelen</strong> is among Europe’s<br />

leading manufacturers of aluminum<br />

<strong>heatshields</strong>. We are able to match the<br />

<strong>automotive</strong> industry’s great diversity<br />

of requirements with our own resources<br />

in the development and manufacture<br />

of <strong>heatshields</strong>.<br />

Aluminum <strong>heatshields</strong> are manufactured<br />

in single-sheet or multi-layer construction<br />

and protect against very high temperatures.<br />

Aluminized steel sheet is used in the hightemperature<br />

range.<br />

Acoustic <strong>heatshields</strong>, which are an inhouse<br />

development at <strong>Sevelen</strong>, consist<br />

of three layers and combine effective<br />

thermal protection with a clear reduction<br />

in external noise.<br />

Our range is expanding constantly with<br />

the development of new and improved<br />

<strong>heatshields</strong>. Our high quality level<br />

Today’s underbody architecture is driven<br />

by aerodynamics and imposes very high<br />

demands on the efficiency of underbody<br />

modules. Structural components are also<br />

subject to continuously increasing requirements.<br />

underbody systems, <strong>Rieter</strong> has the<br />

necessary expertise and technologies to<br />

optimally integrate multiple functions into<br />

underbody solutions and to match these<br />

MaTERIaLS<br />

The properties of underbody shields and<br />

structural components depend above all<br />

on the correct choice of materials. Our<br />

production, development and materials<br />

know-how is a distinct advantage in all<br />

products from this area:<br />

• Underbody shields (under­engine<br />

shields, diffusers, underbody panels<br />

at front and rear, right and left)<br />

• Structural components (pedestrian<br />

protection, multifunction pans, spare<br />

wheel wells, battery trays)<br />

Depending on the application and the<br />

requirements, we utilize a range of<br />

thermoplastics that are combined<br />

either with glass fibers or with natural<br />

fibers. If necessary, these can be<br />

reinforced in particular sections by<br />

the inlay of woven glass fiber mats<br />

and/or glass fiber profiles. We mainly<br />

use the following materials:<br />

<strong>Rieter</strong> Automotive Heatshields AG in<br />

<strong>Sevelen</strong> manufactures 280 different<br />

component parts and develops made-tomeasure,<br />

vehicle-specific solutions for<br />

our customers. We supply our research<br />

know-how and our products, systems and<br />

services to more than 20 different car<br />

makers all over the world.<br />

At our <strong>Sevelen</strong> site, we manufacture daily<br />

around 67,000 component parts, including<br />

42,000 <strong>heatshields</strong> and 25,000 components<br />

for underbody shields. To achieve<br />

this, all our 400 employees devote a great<br />

deal of commitment, specialist knowledge<br />

and quality awareness every day.<br />
