Chiorean 11 Faculty of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Cluj-Napoca, 400020, RomaniaSummaryThis paper presents an efficient computer-based analysis method for practicaladvanced analysis of three-dimensional reinforced concrete frameworks. Theproposed formulation is intended to model the geometrically nonlinear inelasticbehavior of RC frame elements using only one element per member. The behaviourmodel accounts for material inelasticity due to combined bi-axial bending andaxial force, and provides the ability to monitor progressive plastification across thecross-sections of frame elements and structural system under increasing intensityof external loads.Using an updated Lagrangian formulation (UL) the nonlinear geometrical effectsare considered updating the element forces and geometry configurations at eachload increment. The natural deformation approach (NDA) in conjunction with thegeometrical “rigid body qualified” stiffness matrix is adopted for the element forcerecovery and the web plane vector approach is effectively used to update the frameelement coordinates.The analytical method described in this paper can be used to analyze 3Dframeworks with or without a rigid floor diaphragm. The multi-freedomconstraints, required by the rigid body floor model, are imposed by augmenting thefinite element model with the penalty elements.The proposed nonlinear analysis formulation has been implemented in a general -nonlinear static purpose computer program NEFCAD. A computational example isgiven to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the reliability of thecode.KEYWORDS: nonlinear analysis; three-dimensional RC frames; largedeflections; spread of plasticity; rigid body diaphragm.1.
