To all our customers and to all our staff, Editorial update! 10/2010 3 the general state of the European economy remains unsettled. While in the first six months of 2010 some European countries were already seeing their economies picking up, the Greek crisis rocked the countries in the Eurozone. But, despite all, LEHNKERING continues to swim ahead on tranquil waters. Over the last six months our company has succeeded not only in consolidating its position as a leading provider of logistics services, mainly for the chemical and steel industry, across the whole of Europe, but has actually expanded this position further. This good start gives us cause for optimism. We expect that demand for our high-quality logistics services will grow further over the next few years, too. In accordance with these expectations, we are continuing the expansion and modernization of our fleet of inland navigation vessels with the addition of a new gas tank vessel. We have just placed another firm order for a gas tank vessel already placed on option, and have also taken the decision to enlarge our truck fleet (page 4). A further sign of our confidence in market trends is the new branch of LEHNKERING Distribution Logistics & Services in Rotterdam. The hazardous-goods store successfully commenced operations in January this year (page 12). LEHNKERING Euro Logistics is in the process of expanding its network; its managing director, Michael Sterk, reports on the current status of this project (page 10). Over the last few years Schirm GmbH has continually expanded its range of regular customers for the synthesis of crop-protection products (page 16) and the LEHNKERING Shipping Logistics & Services Division is preparing to establish its project logistics in the market in the exact same way (page 7). Our staff are our greatest asset, and without them we would not even be able to cope with this growth. It is only thanks to excellent cooperation between employees at LEHNKERING Chemical Manufacturing Services (CMS) and in our IT department, for example, that we have been able to develop a piece of software which depicts all core processes at CMS sites (page 17). We would like to take this opportunity to introduce one of our employees to you in more detail: Mark van Andel is the new managing director of the Port Logistics Division at LEHNKERING Logistics B.V. in Rotterdam and LEHNKERING Logistics N.V. in Antwerp (page 14). As LEHNKERING emphasizes responsible growth, we will soon be publishing our first Sustainability Report (page 20). Though the main focus of the report will be on the issues of environmental protection and resource conservation, we will also report on our social commitment. Amongst other topics, this issue of LEHNKERING update! tells the stories of two mentally disabled employees at CMS in Wolfenbüttel (page 18), and offers an insight into the support we provide to the SOS-Kinderdorf e.V. children’s charity (page 19). We also report from this year’s LEHNKERING football tournament, which gave our employees the opportunity to show both their physical fitness and their team spirit (page 22).
