8 <strong>update</strong>! 10/2010 Shipping Logistics & Services i LEHNKERING Shipping Logistics & Services Work involving inland-water shipping is concentra- ted at LEHNKERING in the Shipping Logistics and Services (SLS) Division. SLS is active in the gas-, chemical- and oil-tank shipping industry. The product portfolio also includes mineral and coal shipping and raw-materials shipping for the steel industry, plus bulk-cargo and project logistics. In all, the company employs up to 200 internal-waterway craft of vari- ous types and constructions from time to time. The company’s own fleet comprises 58 units, including 16 gas- and 13 chemical- and oil-tanker vessels, plus push boats with 25 push barges. Among the goods carried are bulk cargoes such as coal, minerals and ore, mixed cargoes, finished and semi-finished products, and chemical and petrochemical products. Pre- ferred routes include the whole Rhine region with its tributary waterways, the West German canal region, the Danube and the Elbe. total responsibility for project management, as the custo- mer wishes”, says Friedhelm Reichel, project manager at LEHNKERING Euro Logistics GmbH. “For door-to-door carriage, along with pure inland-waterway transport, we also provide road transport and either motorised coastal vessels or seagoing ships.”
The company has already successfully concluded numerous projects in the past. Among others things, LEHNKERING has transported large-size pressurised containers for its own gas-tanker vessels via the Mittelland Canal to a Dutch shipyard. Each of these New head of Tanker Shipping Division On 7 June 2010 Gaylord Holländer took over as head of the Oil and Chemical Tanker Shipping Division. Mr. Holländer, 40, from Hamburg, replaces Jürgen Thomas, 64, at the Mannheim branch. Mr. Thomas, who has been an executive manager at LEHNKERING since 2008, is taking premature retirement for health reasons. Gaylord Holländer represents LEHNKERING Rhein-Fracht GmbH and the mineral oil shipping unit of LEHNKERING Reederei GmbH. The qualified and experienced shipping specialist is looking back on longstanding experience in the field of inland water transportation, in particular in the tankship business. “Gaylord Holländer is an experienced and highly qualified manager who we are confident will do an excellent job for us and is making the next logical move up the career ladder with us. We are confident he will continue his excellent work as head of the entire division. He will push ahead with the long-term strategy of his predecessor in Mannheim while at the same time giving the company fresh impetus”, com- mented Robert Baack, managing director of LEHNKERING Reederei GmbH and responsible for the Shipping Logistics & Services division at LEHNKERING Holding. Other projects were the transport of two used boilers, each weighing 71 tonnes, which were carried from Dormagen by motorised coastal vessel directly to Tarragona in Spain, and a transport within Germany of a 54 metres long and 6 metres wide rotor blade for a wind-energy converter. “The transport itself is not the most difficult thing”, says Jörg Steinebach, director of project logistics at LEHNKERING Reederei GmbH. “The challenge lies in the overall organi- sation, covering every aspect of the shipment. When is the water level right? How will the plant get to the port? Which government authorities must be notified prior to transport by road?” To answer these and many other questions, LEHNKERING has expert staff available, thoroughly familiar with the optimal types of shipment and transport- related services. Jürgen Thomas, the previ- ous head of the chemicals shipping unit, left the company for health reasons at the end of May, to enter early retirement. In the nearly 30 years’ of his service for LEHNKERING Rhein-Fracht GmbH, he made a vital contri- bution to the company and its success in his capacity initi- ally as a planning coordinator, then as head of shipping and finally as authorised signatory. “We would like to take this opportunity of thanking Jürgen Thomas for his work and com- mitment on the company’s behalf. He has more than earned his retirement and we all hope that he will really enjoy it”, Robert Baack said. Gaylord Holländer
