Editorial update! 10/2010 3
the general state of the European economy remains unsettled. While in the first six months of 2010 some European countries were already
seeing their economies picking up, the Greek crisis rocked the countries in the Eurozone. But, despite all, LEHNKERING continues to swim
ahead on tranquil waters. Over the last six months our company has succeeded not only in consolidating its position as a leading provider
of logistics services, mainly for the chemical and steel industry, across the whole of Europe, but has actually expanded this position further.
This good start gives us cause for optimism. We expect that demand for our high-quality logistics services will grow further over the next
few years, too. In accordance with these expectations, we are continuing the expansion and modernization of our fleet of inland navigation
vessels with the addition of a new gas tank vessel. We have just placed another firm order for a gas tank vessel already placed on option,
and have also taken the decision to enlarge our truck fleet (page 4).
A further sign of our confidence in market trends is the new branch of LEHNKERING Distribution Logistics & Services in Rotterdam. The
hazardous-goods store successfully commenced operations in January this year (page 12). LEHNKERING Euro Logistics is in the process
of expanding its network; its managing director, Michael Sterk, reports on the current status of this project (page 10). Over the last few
years Schirm GmbH has continually expanded its range of regular customers for the synthesis of crop-protection products (page 16)
and the LEHNKERING Shipping Logistics & Services Division is preparing to establish its project logistics in the market in the exact
same way (page 7).
Our staff are our greatest asset, and without them we would not even be able to cope with this growth. It is only thanks to excellent
cooperation between employees at LEHNKERING Chemical Manufacturing Services (CMS) and in our IT department, for example, that
we have been able to develop a piece of software which depicts all core processes at CMS sites (page 17). We would like to take this
opportunity to introduce one of our employees to you in more detail: Mark van Andel is the new managing director of the Port Logistics
Division at LEHNKERING Logistics B.V. in Rotterdam and LEHNKERING Logistics N.V. in Antwerp (page 14).
As LEHNKERING emphasizes responsible growth, we will soon be publishing our first Sustainability Report (page 20). Though the main
focus of the report will be on the issues of environmental protection and resource conservation, we will also report on our social commitment.
Amongst other topics, this issue of LEHNKERING update! tells the stories of two mentally disabled employees at CMS in Wolfenbüttel
(page 18), and offers an insight into the support we provide to the SOS-Kinderdorf e.V. children’s charity (page 19). We also report from
this year’s LEHNKERING football tournament, which gave our employees the opportunity to show both their physical fitness and their team
spirit (page 22).
I wish you all a pleasant and refreshing summer.
With best regards,
Cees van Gent (CEO)

LEHNKERING
on course for growth
The first half-year 2010 was viewed with optimism
at LEHNKERING. Its Vision 2013 sees the firm
emphasizing growth through investment.
Two new gas-tanker ships, the replacement of 217
trucks and more than 200 canvas-covered trailers and
high growth rates, all indicate that LEHNKERING is
expecting its order-books to continue to grow.
It will be 95 metres long and 11.45 metres wide, the
latest ship in our company’s fleet of gas tankers.
On 23 April 2010 LEHNKERING commissioned the Dutch
shipyard TeamCo SHIPYARD BV to build the new gas tanker,
the same yard that built the LRG GAS 87, which was put into
service in 2009. As with the LRG GAS 85, 86 and 87, once
again BUREAU VERITAS has been commissioned as the
ship-classification bureau.
In all, the LRG GAS 88 will be the seventeenth ship in the
LEHNKERING fleet of inland-navigation vessels. It will
take about 14 months to build. Two modern 634 KW
engines with economical fuel consumption will
drive the new vessel. The gas tanker’s area of
deployment will be the European waterways
and canals.
The four pressurised gas containers are being made in Germany
by the firm Gronemeyer & Banck. They are all 33.60
metres long, have a diameter of 4.80 metres, and have a
capacity of 582 cubic metres each. They are suitable for
transporting all liquefied gases under pressure, such as butadiene,
butane, propane, and propylene, as well as ammonia
and propylene oxide, thus meeting all future customer
requirements. Since the ship will be given tanks of a larger
volume than is allowed for a normal double-hull construction,
the body will be fitted with increased collision protection. This
will involve a special mode of construction, the first time that
LEHNKERING has used it, a so-called “scaling skin.”
The new gas-tanker is the best example of the way
LEHNKERING is investing in the future and of its certainty
that the market will grow again over the next few years.
“We have not only ordered the new ship”, said Cees van
Gent, CEO LEHNKERING, after signing the contract. “At the
same time we have also taken an option on a further ship,
the LRG GAS 89, at the yard.” The prognosis confirmed,
LEHNKERING has placed a firm order for the LRG GAS 89.
Construction of the vessel is underway.
“The LEHNKERING Shipping Logistics & Services Division,
with its strategic business units of Dry Goods Shipping and
Tanker Shipping, and given the structure of its fleet, consisting
of its own and chartered vessels, intends to position itself
overall even more strongly as a universal shipping line in the
future”, added Robert Baack, COO for the Shipping Logistics
& Services Division. “For all business units in SLS, given their
market position and the strong LEHNKERING brand, have
sustainable growth potential.”
In order to cope with increasing cargo volumes, the
LEHNKERING Road Logistics & Services Division (RLS)
is currently investing in modern, efficient vehicles for its
German, Dutch and Polish fleets. By 2013, Duisburgbased
LEHNKERING Chemical Transport GmbH and
LEHNKERING Euro Logistics GmbH, LEHNKERING
Transport GmbH in Salzgitter and LEHNKERING Logistik
Sp. z o.o. in Miękina (Poland) will have completely replaced
their trucks.
6 update! 10/2010 LEHNKERING-Group
The RLS Division is placing orders with Mercedes Benz for
a total of 151 double-axle trucks for tanker semi-trailers, 63
double- and triple-axle trucks for tent and special semi-trailers
and three further tripleaxle trucks for Ro-Ro containers. The
initial orders will be placed in July 2010, with the first vehicles
due to be delivered within eight to ten weeks. The entire fleet
is to be replaced by 2013.
The LEHNKERING call to tender for the above-mentioned
vehicles set high standards in terms of technical equipment,
safety and comfort. Depending on its home location, each of
the group’s trucks are forecasted to cover between 100,000
and 150,000 km per year, and the 430-460 horsepower
vehicles will ensure sustainability from both an ecological
and economic perspective. The replacement of old Euro
II and III vehicles with modern Euro V vehicles will both
reduce the fleet’s CO output and reduce its future environ-
2
mental impact, and a reduction in costs and an increase in
quality will also be achieved. This investment in replacement
vehicles confirms LEHNKERING underlining its fundamental
values and corporate principles in terms of quality, environmental
responsibility, health & safety, transparency, orientation
and sustainability. The vehicles will be ADR-compliant
and fitted with the maximum in safety features, and LEHN-
KERING has also made brake assist devices and blind sport
monitors a requirement alongside airbags and modern
seatbelt systems. Comfort and modernization of the
driver’s workplace has been taken into consideration in
the cabin equipment.
The tent trailers in the LEHNKERING Euro Logistics
GmbH fleet are also to be replaced by 2013. Although
the tender process is ongoing, LEHNKERING will already
receive initial deliveries during the course of 2010.
In addition, LEHNKERING Chemical Transport GmbH has
placed an order for weight-optimized tanker trailers which
facilitate the transport of larger volumes. This investment
not only sees the company improve its competitiveness,
but also provides evidence of its client focus. The tank
trailers are due to be brought into service at the beginning
of August.
In the words of Cees van Gent, CEO at LEHNKERING:
“These investment projects see us support one of the
most important facets of our vision for the Road Logistics
& Services Division in 2013. Optimal service quality
and the utmost in safety, client satisfaction and environmental
responsibility are the cornerstones of sustainable
corporate development and the continued expansion
of the Division.”

Making heavy
goods light
SLS will expand project logistics further
Because of their size, inland-waterway vessels are ideal
for transporting heavy goods and project shipments. For
many goods whose dimensions are too large, or too hea-
vy, for road or rail carriage, an inland-waterway craft is of-
ten the only means of transport which can be used without
problems. Transport by water causes no traffic jams and
damages neither roads and houses nor transport infra-
structure such as traffic lights. Moreover a valuable cargo
will arrive safely by inland-waterway vessel at its destinati-
on − whether the cargo comprises tanks, turbines or large
plant items. Environmental protection, which has increased
constantly in importance over the last few years, is also an
argument: inland waterway shipping is the carrier with the
best ecological balance, low energy consumption, and thus
noise pollution is as good as excluded.
LEHNKERING Shipping Logistics & Services has been
transporting mixed cargoes and finished and semi-finished
goods for project shipments on all European waterways
update! 10/2010 7
Inland-waterway vessels have many advantages as a means of transport, particularly including their low transport
costs, large loading capacities, reliability and environmental friendliness. All these features prove their value when
it comes to transporting heavy goods, special cargoes and project shipments. That is why LEHNKERING Shipping
Logistics & Services is currently directing all its marketing to this segment in particular.
from the very beginning. These are bulk mixed cargoes
such as flat or long products from the steel industry, as well
as heavy, oversized project shipments such as wind-ener-
gy converters, turbines, boilers, generators, containers, or
complete plants. The company intends to use this experi-
ence, and its good contacts with customers in many diffe-
rent sectors of the industry, to expand its project logistics
further. With this in mind, LEHNKERING began by analy-
sing the market, to adjust its future marketing on this basis.
The infrastructure for more project logistics is available:
to guarantee reliable shipments, LEHNKERING has
its own fleet of ships and a large number of shipper-ow-
ned barges at its disposal. Its own fleet consists of 20
covered and open push barges with up to 2,800 tonnes
carrying capacity, plus some 120 covered or open
motor vessels of 600 to 3,200 tonnes carrying capacity.
The Road Logistics & Services Division is also invol-
ved in project logistics. “We will take over either part- or

Work involving inland-water shipping is concentra-
ted at LEHNKERING in the Shipping Logistics and
Services (SLS) Division. SLS is active in the gas-,
chemical- and oil-tank shipping industry. The product
portfolio also includes mineral and coal shipping and
raw-materials shipping for the steel industry, plus
bulk-cargo and project logistics. In all, the company
employs up to 200 internal-waterway craft of vari-
ous types and constructions from time to time. The
company’s own fleet comprises 58 units, including
16 gas- and 13 chemical- and oil-tanker vessels, plus
push boats with 25 push barges. Among the goods
carried are bulk cargoes such as coal, minerals and
ore, mixed cargoes, finished and semi-finished pro-
ducts, and chemical and petrochemical products. Pre-
ferred routes include the whole Rhine region with its
tributary waterways, the West German canal region,
the Danube and the Elbe.
total responsibility for project management, as the custo-
mer wishes”, says Friedhelm Reichel, project manager at
LEHNKERING Euro Logistics GmbH. “For door-to-door
carriage, along with pure inland-waterway transport, we
also provide road transport and either motorised coastal
vessels or seagoing ships.”
The company has already successfully concluded
numerous projects in the past. Among others things,
LEHNKERING has transported large-size pressu-
rised containers for its own gas-tanker vessels via the
Mittelland Canal to a Dutch shipyard. Each of these
New head of Tanker Shipping Division
On 7 June 2010 Gaylord Holländer took over as head of the Oil and Chemical Tanker
Shipping Division. Mr. Holländer, 40, from Hamburg, replaces Jürgen Thomas, 64, at the
Mannheim branch. Mr. Thomas, who has been an executive manager at LEHNKERING
since 2008, is taking premature retirement for health reasons.
Gaylord Holländer represents LEHNKERING Rhein-Fracht
GmbH and the mineral oil shipping unit of LEHNKERING
Reederei GmbH. The qualified and experienced shipping
specialist is looking back on longstanding experience in the
field of inland water transportation, in particular in the tankship
business. “Gaylord Holländer is an experienced and highly
qualified manager who we are confident will do an excellent
job for us and is making the next logical move up the career
ladder with us. We are confident he will continue his excellent
work as head of the entire division. He will push ahead with
the long-term strategy of his predecessor in Mannheim while
at the same time giving the company fresh impetus”, com-
mented Robert Baack, managing director of LEHNKERING
Reederei GmbH and responsible for the Shipping Logistics &
Services division at LEHNKERING Holding.
630 cubic metre containers had a weight of 26.5 tonnes.
Other projects were the transport of two used boilers, each
weighing 71 tonnes, which were carried from Dormagen by
motorised coastal vessel directly to Tarragona in Spain, and
a transport within Germany of a 54 metres long and 6 met-
res wide rotor blade for a wind-energy converter.
“The transport itself is not the most difficult thing”, says Jörg
Steinebach, director of project logistics at LEHNKERING
Reederei GmbH. “The challenge lies in the overall organi-
sation, covering every aspect of the shipment. When is the
water level right? How will the plant get to the port? Which
government authorities must be notified prior to transport
by road?” To answer these and many other questions,
LEHNKERING has expert staff available, thoroughly
familiar with the optimal types of shipment and transport-
related services.
Jürgen Thomas, the previ-
ous head of the chemicals
shipping unit, left the com-
pany for health reasons
at the end of May, to enter
early retirement. In the nearly 30 years’ of his service for
LEHNKERING Rhein-Fracht GmbH, he made a vital contri-
bution to the company and its success in his capacity initi-
ally as a planning coordinator, then as head of shipping and
finally as authorised signatory. “We would like to take this
opportunity of thanking Jürgen Thomas for his work and com-
mitment on the company’s behalf. He has more than earned
his retirement and we all hope that he will really enjoy it”,
10 update! 10/2010 Road Logistics & Services
“We intend to take
the company one step forward”
LEHNKERING Euro Logistics is continuing to expand its European network
LEHNKERING Euro Logistics is one of the leading service
providers across the whole of Europe for customers from
the chemical and steel industries, and from trade and
industry in general. The logistics operator supplies them
with frequent services, linking Europe’s main business
cities. The company has its own branches in Sweden,
Finland, Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland and
can rely on partners of many years’ standing in Europe.
Michael Sterk (45), the company’s Managing Director,
talks about the progress being made in expanding the
European network.
Mr. Sterk, you took over as managing director of
LEHNKERING Euro Logistics a year ago. One of your
aims when you took the job was to build up and expand
a European network. How far have you gotten?
Euro Logistics had a network to begin with, the network formed
by our branches in the individual countries, complemented
by contacts of many years’ standing with partner companies.
These partnerships are very important, but their work
concentrates on the return freighting of our trucks. We
intend to take the company one step forward, however, and
establish it as a presence in all the countries of central and
southern Europe. This applies particularly to our new product
alignments for bulk cargoes and palette distribution as well
as for steel and chemistry. Furthermore we want to win the
big customers in the chemical industry for „packed goods“.
Success can already be seen.
i LEHNKERING Road Logistics & Services
Does that mean you now intend to contend with your
established competitors in the bulk-cargo business?
Yes and no, it is not as simple as that. Look, of course we
can’t keep up in all areas with the very highly standardised
processes and high branch density of some of our
competitors. But we don’t want to; we see our opportunities
rather in our customer-specific orientation. That means we
Road traffic operations at LEHNKERING are united in its Road Logistics & Services (RLS) Division. RLS is amongst
Europe’s leading service providers for clients in the chemical and steel industries, as well as other industrial and
commercial sectors. The fleet operated by RLS comprises a total of 236 towing vehicles and 612 trailers. This fleet
is used to carry out pan-European tanker transportation of hazardous liquid chemicals of all types, as well as the
high-frequency conveyance of full or partial loads to economic hubs around Europe. Some of the vehicles used
are optimized to the weight of their payload, which can be up to 28 tons. Special vehicles adapted for the transport
of steel and steel piece goods are also available, and can carry high load weights, high concentrated loads and
oversize loads without any problems.
The logistics services provided by LEHNKERING guarantee speed, punctuality and efficiency. Safety is also one
of the stand-out characteristics of the company’s portfolio.
What is more, LEHNKERING is able to call upon the services of a wide range of established European partners.
The innovative in-house IT network which connects LEHNKERING offices and partners with one another facilitates
highly flexible, client-oriented transport management.
intend, not to offer our customers a highly automated service,
but to meet their requirements. The service in our network is
tailor-made. We work to fulfil our customers’ wishes on an
individual basis; that is our strength.
What does that mean in concrete terms?
Michael Sterk, Managing Director
Lehnkering Euro Logistics GmbH
LEHNKERING Euro Logistics of Duisburg and its branches
in Basel, Malmö, Helsinki, Wroclaw and Prague all have an
outstanding infrastructure. Even when we buy in services at
these locations, our quality is outstanding and is designed
to meet customer requirements. In Mannheim we are a
joint member of System Alliance, one of the biggest system
networks for bulk cargoes in Germany. In our work we focus
on the Rhine-Ruhr and Rhine-Main-Neckar regions, at
Duisburg and Mannheim. Both these cities are situated in
regions where the chemical industry is a major player.
We intend to dispatch complete loads, part-loads and bulk-
cargo shipments for our customers at the same time; this
will make it easier for customers when selecting their freight
carriers, and we will be able to exploit potential synergies
better. Then we simply feed in the bulk-cargo shipments,
once collected, to our high-quality partners at the individual
locations in Europe. It is our advantage that we have our own
equipment at all places: our vehicles are underway almost
daily in all the most important regions. Thanks to presence of
our fleet, we have the advantage of being able to design the
main legs of our journeys simply. And at the same time we get
back cargoes again for Germany from our network partners.
In which countries can you already use your network?
Our networks vary, depending on the product. For example,
in Spain we have gained a long-term partner in the Barcelona
Road Logistics & Services
update! 10/2010 11
region, in the shape of Mestrans, and a new partner for the
Madrid region and for Irun, in the shape of ULS. Both use our
equipment and load it for their customers back to Germany.
We also have a genuine bulk-cargo and distribution partner
in Spain, Transabadell, which has its head office in Barcelona
and is represented at another 50 locations in Spain. We
can feed in bulk cargoes and palettes at various locations
there and distribute them across the whole country, including
Portugal, in 24 to 48 hours. Transabadell specialises
particularly in the carriage of hazardous goods, so transport
within the network in Spain is no problem. We have adopted
the same procedure in other countries. We have approached
new joint partners in France, Italy and Belgium, too; thus we
have gained two efficient companies − Nuova Transports in
Italy and Gondrand in Belgium − with whom we shall shortly
be operating regular services. Our branch in Mannheim and
our depot in Duisburg are used particularly for imports.
We are also in the process of gaining new partners in
England, Ireland, Denmark, Norway and Austria. This means
by the middle of the year we shall have covered the traditional
European countries and are right on schedule. In the second
half of the year we shall then shift our focus onto eastern
Europe; there we have some catching up to do.
Do your customers benefit from this and have you
already seen some initial successes?
Customers of LEHNKERING Euro Logistics are primarily
accustomed to us carrying part and complete shipments in
a highly qualified and reliable way; that will continue to be
our core expertise. Nevertheless, we intend to offer additional
services; these will include distribution, rail-and-road services,
or even project business.
Yes, we have actually seen some initial successes. For
example, we have begun distribution of electronic goods
for a major retail chain, and gained the distribution business
of a Spanish animal-food producer in Germany, including
warehousing. Further new business will certainly be added
in future, I am sure.

Successful start in Rotterdam
In January 2010 the LEHNKERING Distribution Logistics & Services (DLS) Division
started business operations at its new hazardous-goods store in Rotterdam.
After the foam-extinguisher system had been success-
fully tested in November 2009, LEHNKERING was able
to start storing the goods. Within a very short time its
ten new, and existing, customers were established at
the site.
In its high-shelf store in the port of Rotterdam LEHNKERING
has some 12,000 palette-storage spaces, covering 6,000
square metres, on which hazardous materials in ADR
hazardous-goods categories 3, 6.1, 8 and 9 (flammab-
le, poisonous, corrosive, environmentally dangerous) can
be warehoused. At this site the company stores different
products for their regional und international customers.
The DLS depots are located in Baar-Ebenhausen, Biebesheim, Bottrop, Duisburg,
Fürth, Hamburg, Krefeld/Uerdingen, Langelsheim, Leuna, Lübeck, Mannheim,
Münster, Schönebeck/Elbe, Schüttorf, Wolfenbüttel, Barendrecht (The
Netherlands), Rotterdam, and Ennis (Texas, USA).
up to speed rapidly”, says Michael Pohl, a member of the
divisional management board of LEHNKERING GmbH,
Distribution Logistics & Services. Services at Rotterdam are
oriented thoroughly towards the customer’s supply chain
− they run from import and export handling, to delivery-in-
store and incoming-goods monitoring, right up to individual
order picking and Europe-wide distribution. LEHNKERING
can further provide its customers with fiscal representati-
on and, because the goods in the bonded warehouse are
only subject to customs dues when they are taken out,
LEHNKERING also undertakes this task.
“The demand for storage logistics for hazardous goods
in Rotterdam continues to be very high and will rise

further in the medium term”, expects Uwe Willhaus,
COO LEHNKERING, in charge of the Distribution
Logistics & Services Division. This is evidenced by the hand-
ling figures for the port of Rotterdam: there goods handling
fell by 8.5 percent in 2009, but 2010 promises growth again.
The first quarter of 2010 already saw a rise of 14 percent in
handling volume. Among the goods with the highest growth
rates are oil products, up 30 percent.
From this industry comes one of LEHNKERING’s top custo-
mers in Rotterdam. In the time space of two weeks the ser-
vice provider stored 3,000 palettes of oil and lubricants for
this customer in an uninterrupted operation. Now its goods
regularly arrive at the port of Rotterdam in containers from
Canada. LEHNKERING collects them by truck and unloads
the barrels, intermediate bulk containers (plastic tanks with
grills) or cardboard boxes. Then they are stored batch by
batch, since picking is done not just by product and item
number, but also by batch number and filling date. Following
call-up via EDI, LEHNKERING likewise undertakes the
distribution to the further-processing industry over the
whole of Europe.

Strengthening the
Port Logistics
Mark van Andel
LEHNKERING Logistics B.V. in Rotterdam and LEHNKERING Logistics N.V. in Antwerp have a new Managing
Director. Since March, Mark van Andel, 46, has been in charge of port logistics at both locations.
Lehnkering will benefit from the new Managing Director’s
wide experience, since he knows the logistics industry
from many different angles. “Mark van Andel is not only
familiar with the international markets; he has worked
across the whole logistics chain − from warehousing and
distribution, to supply-chain management, to air, ocean
and road forwarding and to spare-parts logistics”, says
Uwe Willhaus, Managing Director of LEHNKERING, in
charge of the Distribution Logistics & Services Division.
“We are sure he will bring plenty of new and interesting
initiatives to our company.”
Mark van Andel has over 20 years of experience as a
manager in the logistics sector. He has always focussed
on superior customer performance but at the same time
scored high in quality and compliance, while keeping
cost levels competitive. Mark van Andel places particular
importance on customer orientation.
Mark began his career at the Technical University of
Delft. It was there in 1989 that he took his degree in
mechanical engineering, with a special subject in logi-
stics. Later, among other posts, he was Project Mana-
ger at Fokker Aircraft B.V. and at the Bulk Stevedoring
Company “Royal Franz Swarttouw BV” in Rotterdam.
Van Andel also worked for many years at UPS Supply
Chain Solutions as their Managing Director and Director
of Contract Logistics EMEA West District (Benelux and
France). There he developed the international logistics
business and he was involved in the integration of multiple
acquisitions. Most recently, he was the Managing Direc-
tor for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Ryder System.

Dr. Bernd Müller, CEO at Schirm GmbH, explains the reasoning
behind this expansion of the companies‘ cooperation:
“With this contract we take a key step towards safeguarding
our future. We aim to use it to develop our business activities
in China, as this will allow Schirm GmbH - the chemical
manufacturing services arm of the LEHNKERING group - to
continue to grow.”
TPF and Schirm GmbH have been cooperating closely
on the production of pest control agents since 1996. The
partnership sees TPF produce agents according to a precisely
defined chemical procedure developed by Schirm in
Germany. Schirm essentially uses TPF as an extended
workbench for the execution of synthesis services for its
European clients, as the agents manufactured at TPF are
destined exclusively for Schirm clients.
After six months of intensive contractual negotiations
conducted between Schirm and TPF and accompanied by
the prestigious global law firm Salans, a large number of
individual contracts have now become a new overarching
contract. The process also saw the contract adapted to
contemporary economic practice.

More customers for synthesis services
For many years now Schirm GmbH has been synthesising crop-protection agents at its Schönebeck location.
Following construction of a pilot synthesising station in 2000 and a new multi-purpose synthesising plant in 2002,
for the first time the company was able to establish the synthesis of fine and special chemicals. Over the last
few years the list of regular customers for custom synthesis has expanded to more than 30 companies.
Along with well-known chemical firms in Germany, production is also underway for international companies based
in Italy, France, Switzerland and the USA.
As a neutral service provider, Schirm starts by carrying out
processes to its customer’s orders at laboratory level. Next
come pilot experiments in the pilot plant, in order to transfer
the synthesis successfully to the multi-purpose synthesising
plant later.
The multi-purpose synthesising plant is highly automated
and is controlled using a modern process-control system.
It is equipped with 19 stirrer-tank reactors, 15 receiver
tanks, a refrigeration belt, various filters, dryers, centrifuges
and distillation towers. The plant also includes a tank store
with a total capacity of 530 cubic metres. The reactions are
effected at temperatures of − 15 to 280º C and pressures of
2 mbar to 6 bar. A wide range of licences makes it possible
to carry out syntheses using corrosive, poisonous,
very poisonous and easily flammable substances or CMR
materials (carcinogenic, mutagenic, reproduction-toxic).
The quality of the products manufactured, and of the intermediate
stages, are scrutinised and checked in Schirm
GmbH’s modern laboratory.
The multi-purpose synthesising plant can be adapted to
each technology and process method required. Up to
6 syntheses are currently carried out concurrently in a four-
i LEHNKERING Chemical Manufacturing Services
shift system and some 4,000 tons of fine chemicals are
synthesised for various customers covering different areas
of use, including biocides and conservation products for
dyes, plastics, paper, adhesives, fuels or textiles. Further
products include disinfectants for hospital hygiene, prepolymers
for the manufacture of skiers and snowboards,
intermediate products for automotive and high-performance
plastics, accelerators and catalysts for epoxide resins,
and raw materials for the rubber industry, such as catalytic
softeners for tyres and shoe soles, or bonding agents.
A total of 59 different synthesised products were manufactured
in 2009. Annual synthesis capacity has been significantly
raised from year to year since 2001; at the beginning,
eight to ten new synthesis products were added.
A further area of expertise at Schirm GmbH in Schönebeck
is that of cleansing active ingredients or other products by
re-crystallisation (cooling or solvent crystallisation). Through
constant technology enhancements Schirm is able to offer
its customers more and more services, and is able to gain
new customers. Schirm is not restricted to special areas of
application, but is open to all types of reaction, such as condensations,
cyclisations, reductions, additions, oxidations,
aminations or alkylations.
The LEHNKERING Chemical Manufacturing Services (CMS) Division bundles the services of the Schirm GmbH with which
LEHNKERING supports its customers from the chemical industry in producing and packaging their goods. CMS offers a broad
portfolio of services:
n Commission synthesis of agricultural chemicals and fine chemicals, e.g. development of products by CMS, or development in
accordance with customer specifications, in modern laboratories; testing in pilot plant; manufacture of products in CMS’s own
synthesis plant;
n raw-materials service, i.e. procurement of active ingredients and raw materials for our customers in the chemical industry, and
preparation and refining of raw materials as required;
n formulation of active ingredients for pesticides, biocides, and additives
n packaging of solid or fluid materials; special packaging in water-soluble or low-melt bags;
n sample service for chemical products, i.e. filling chemicals into small and very small containers (250 ml to 1 l bottles); storage of
sample containers in our own specialist store; and shipping of samples world-wide.
On 1 June LEHNKERING Chemical Manufacturing
Services (CMS) commenced launch of a new software.
CargoProcess was developed because the operating
systems employed so far at CMS did not have all the
functions required, and a uniform, overarching and
future-oriented system had been sought, to develop
Schirm GmbH further in the market for the long term.
In order to focus the IT system even more closely on
client requirements, the LEHNKERING IT department
set about developing a piece of software especially for
this division.
“After taking over the Wolfenbüttel branch in September 2008,
the Chemical Manufacturing Services Division was faced
with the challenging task of setting up a software system with
short notice that would cover the functionalities absolutely
necessary for productive contract manufacture and support
the large number of SAP interfaces involved”, remembers
Dr. Bernd Müller. It was decided to extend CargoWare,
a familiar and well-tried software, to include these functionalities.
To do this, it was necessary to develop an ERP software
to support the core processes.
There was need for a new software at the Chemical Manufacturing
Services locations in Schönebeck, Baar-Ebenhausen
and Lübeck as well. The standard software; in the version
currently used, did not display all business processes sufficiently.
After CargoProcess had been successfully launched,
it was decided to support the Division’s business processes
using an improved and extended version of CargoProcess.
This would also help to approach LEHNKERING’s goal of
displaying both financial accounting and controlling at all
works on its central SAP.
One for all: CargoProcess 2 software
is online
Chemical Manufacturing Services Division launches uniform
goods-management system to improve customer value
It was now necessary, in developing CargoProcess further,
to realise the specific requirements of CMS, with a corresponding
focus on high flexibility and rapid response
time. The IT Development Department also needed to add
those functions which were not displayed yet. Among the
new functions added were those of offer management and
estimation, customer-order management, calculation of material
requirements, availability checking, various evaluation
concepts, and automated production planning. In this way
CargoProcess creates transparency and makes it possible
for Schirm to plan production capacity better across all locations
and to operate such capacity at an optimal level.
When the kick-off meeting for the development of the new
software was held in December 2008 a steering committee
and a project-management group were set up for the project.
Together with key users involved in all departments and
further staff at the various locations, they supervised and assisted
the development process. These teams acted as sources
of expert information, aiding the IT Department, so that
proper notes were taken of both theory and practice in all
stages of development. Joint workshops started as early as
January 2009 to develop the software. Followed by intensive
function and integration tests, designed to ensure a system
launch as smooth as possible.
The great efforts to improve customer value made by all
those involved over the past year and a half payed out:
on 1 June CargoProcess was successfully launched at the
Lübeck location. Wolfenbüttel launched the improved version
on 1 July. Baar-Ebenhausen will follow on 1 August, and
on 1 October 2010 the largest CMS works at Schönebeck,
covering production, development and raw-materials-service
divisions, will conclude the implementation stage.

Hidden talents
Two disabled staff members working at CMS in Wolfenbüttel
In our society we look on involvement in a working life
as an essential element in the development of the personality.
Work provides a means of self affirmation, independence,
social recognition and life in the community.
People with disabilities want this recognition, too. Since
six months back two of them are working in the Chemical
Manufacturing Services (CMS) Division of LEHNKERING
GmbH in Wolfenbüttel.
The Chemical Manufacturing Services (CMS) Division in
Wolfenbüttel provides customers from the agricultural and
fine chemicals industries with a wide range of services,
including formulation, packaging, and labelling of containers
of all kinds. In 2008 LEHNKERING took over the former
location of Bayer CropScience. In the same year Helmstedt-
Wolfenbüttel Care for the Disabled bought the former Bayer
location fire-brigade station and converted it into a workshop
for the mentally disabled.
The close proximity of the two locations soon turned out to
have advantages for both sides: the workshops undertook
initial small jobs for LEHNKERING. As a result, Care for
the Disabled contacted Christian Horn, head of production
and technology, and asked whether the company would
have any interest in employing two young men on
a long-term practical placement. They were
indeed interested; so, on 1 November
2009, 27-year-old Timo Mummert and
23-year-old René Jonigkeit had their first
day of work at LEHNKERING.
“Both employees soon found their feet; they
earned praise from the permanent staff and
carried out their work with very great care”,
reports Christian Horn. “This means we
René Jonigkeit (left) and Timo Mummert bei CMS in Wolfenbüttel
can employ them in any of our teams.” In their teams Timo
and René are given lighter groundwork which is not directly
connected with production. That is mostly simple manual
work, such as labelling empty containers, packing goods into
cardboard boxes, or getting materials ready.
Both employees are enthusiastic about their work, which they
enjoy. “Having work means taking part, finding recognition
through your own efforts, testing yourself on challenging
tasks, and developing beyond your own limitations”, says
Axel Kossmann, a social worker at Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel
Care for the Disabled. “Work provides a structure to life and
gives leisure time a value.”
Because disabled people frequently need special support if
they are to cope with the personal, social and practical career
demands of a working life, integration into the working world
is aided at Care for the Disabled by supplementary facilities.
These include educational courses such as sport. Timo plays
football, in the German National Team of the Disabled. In
2006 he took part with his team in the Football World Cup
for People with Intellectual Disability in Germany. Now, along
with his work for LEHNKERING, he is preparing for South
Africa. There, from 21 August to 12 September 2010, the fifth
World Cup for People with Intellectual Disability will be held
by the INAS (International Sports Federation for People with
Intellectual Disability).

Hand in Hand
LEHNKERING helping SOS Children’s Villages in Germany and Haiti
After LEHNKERING supported the SOS Lower Rhine
Children’s Village through a sponsorship last year, now the
company is undertaking the support and maintenance of a
family in the Sauerland SOS Children’s Village. Five or six
children and young people live there at a time, together with
an SOS Children’s Village mother, as a family in one house.
Now, unlike earlier, only a few children are orphans. Most
of those finding refuge here come from families in which the
parents can no longer take proper care of their children.
Rapid help after the earthquake in Haiti
Help of a much more urgent kind was needed after the devas-
tating earthquake which on 12 January 2010 brought death
and destruction to the people of Haiti. The quake cost around
220,000 lives, injured some 300,000 people, and made over 1
million people homeless. More than 600,000 people fled from
Port-au-Prince in the neighbouring areas. SOS Children’s
Villages then launched a large-scale relief effort, to support
a total of 40,000 children and families. Very quickly after the
earthquake SOS staff began to provide children and families
with clean water, warm meals and relief items.
update! 10/2010 19
Children are our hope and our future. That is why, in its charitable and welfare work, LEHNKERING is concentrating
particularly on the SOS Children’s Villages. In Germany the company is undertaking the support and maintenance of
a family from the SOS Children’s Village in Sauerland. Moreover, after the severe earthquake in Haiti, LEHNKERING
collected baby food from the manufacturer, quickly and unbureaucratically, and transported it to Munich Airport.
Donations from Germany were also taken to the disas-
ter zone. LEHNKERING supported SOS Children’s Vil-
lages by transporting baby food from the German manu-
facturer to Munich Airport, from where the food was
carried to Haiti.
With the aid of such donations SOS staff were able to dis-
tribute medicines and food in the neighbourhood. Since the
earthquake had led to no loss of life in the two Haitian SOS
Children’s Villages, and no severe damage had been incur-
red, they were able to serve as a basis and starting point for
the relief work with which the SOS staff aided children and
families in the surrounding districts.

For Mankind and
LEHNKERING publishes its first
Sustainability Report for the year 2009
Sustainability is increasingly one of the most important
factors for corporate success, and many companies now
compile an annual sustainability report in order to keep
stakeholders informed of the economic, ecological and
social initiatives they are involved in. For the first time
LEHNKERING will publish this type of information for
the year 2009.
A group-wide QEHS management system (quality, environ-
ment, health & safety) has been in place at LEHNKERING
since 2004. The principles set out within the system also take
into account requirements and goals related to reductions in
energy consumption and responsible use of natural resources.
“We have had the majority of our environmentally relevant
facilities in Germany certified according to ISO 14001”,
reports Dr. Wolfgang Lohre, head of QEHS at LEHNKERING.
The decision to introduce a sustainability programme
at LEHNKERING represents the logical continuation of
the company’s established environmental responsibility
policy. Under the banner of “Green Logistics + Services”,
LEHNKERING aims to place even greater emphasis on environmental
sustainability within the framework of its corporate
strategy, and has defined increases in efficiency and reductions
in CO emissions as its key goals. In the words of Wolf-
2
gang Lohre: “Amongst other data, our sustainability report
sees us calculate the corporate carbon footprint of the entire
LEHNKERING group. Due to the complexity of the identification
and allocation of individual activities and services within
the field of logistics, we are not calculating carbon footprints
for individual products at the present time.”
the Environment
As there is currently no universally recognized analysis and
measurement method for the calculation of CO emission
2
values, LEHNKERING applies conversion factors which take
into account both direct and indirect emissions. Direct emissions
are those which occur as a result of the combustion of
primary energy sources such as fuel oil, natural gas or diesel.
The CO which arises during the generation of energy sour-
2
ces the company buys “ready to use” (such as electricity or
district heating) is classified as an indirect emission.
“We can only achieve our sustainability goals if all our emplo-
yees support and work towards them”, explains Wolfgang
Lohre. “In the future, all our internal QEHS and environmental
training sessions will deal with issues of environmental protection
and resource conservation in greater detail. If each
individual makes just a few small changes or improvements,
this can add up to a big positive impact on our company
as a whole. This involves reductions in paper consumption
just as much as more efficient use of business trips and
company cars.”
In the case of its in-house fleet of trucks,
LEHNKERING places importance on fuel-efficient
vehicles and an energy-saving driving
style. In addition, efficiency can be raised
by optimizing vehicle capacity utilization and reducing the
number of kilometres driven without cargo. LEHNKERING
has made improvements in this area by introducing the new
“Punch Telematix” system, which calculates optimal routes
and assesses the way in which drivers brake and accelerate.
Even though inland navigation vessels are already seen
as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation,
LEHNKERING is also keen to achieve energy efficiency
improvements in this field. In the case of both new-build
and vessel modernization projects, the LEHNKERING
shipping division not only encourages the development
LEHNKERING-Group
update! 10/2010 21
of smaller motors which consume less fuel, but also emphasizes
optimal hydrodynamic design.
Energy is also consumed by the handling, racking, heating
and refrigeration systems used at storage and handling
facilities. When building or modifying such facilities,
LEHNKERING gives preference to modern building materials.
Handling and loading systems are regularly checked for
potential energy-saving opportunities.
The processes employed by the Chemical Manufacturing
Services (CMS) Division are constantly being made more
efficient. This involves not only saving energy, but also conserving
water resources and preventing soil contamination.
The most important principle of the LEHNKERING waste
management strategy is to prevent waste being created in
the first place. In particular, the company has set itself the
goal of reducing the volume of hazardous waste generated.
As a proportion of hazardous waste disposal is carried out on
behalf of clients, a reduction in waste volumes is sometimes
only possible in close cooperation with the respective client.
Employee health and safety is a further prerequisite for the
achievement of corporate success at LEHNKERING, and
the company therefore places significant importance on a
sustainable health protection and accident prevention policy.
This includes ensuring that risk to employees is as low as
possible, and also involves preventative measures such as
flu jabs and the publication of a catalogue of suitable work
apparel. The support provided by LEHNKERING to the SOS-
Kinderdorf e.V. children’s charity is a sign of social commitment
at the company.
Wolfgang Lohre looks to the future: “The goal for the next
few years is to also take indirect emissions into account, for
example those which arise when third-party vehicles are
used or our goods are delivered. We will also be integrating
all of our international sites into our calculations, as this will
provide us with an overall picture of the emissions generated
by the entire LEHNKERING group. All of this will go towards
making us even more environmentally responsible.”

to enjoy all the thrills and spills the tournament
had to offer.
In addition to a large number of German sides, the event
was also attended by teams from offices in the Netherlands,
Switzerland, Scandinavia, Luxembourg and Poland.
Matches were 15 minutes long, and each of the 75 played
saw colleagues underline both their team spirit and sense
of fair play.
There were a wealth of activities offered to the crowd
besides watching football, and children had the opportunity
to conquer a bouncy castle, go for goal on the target
practice wall or have their face painted. As energetic exercise
is a sure-fire way to get the tummy rumbling, sportsmen
and spectators alike were able to take their pick from a
delicious barbecue, all the delights of an authentic ice cream
van and, during the afternoon, a wide variety of cakes. The
World Cup match between the Netherlands and Japan was
shown (much to the delight of our Dutch colleagues), and
our Swedish visitors were kept up to date on the wedding of
Princess Victoria of Sweden and Daniel Westling.
The final was the sporting highlight of the tournament,
and pitted two outstanding teams against each another:
LEHNKERING Steel Peine and Schirm Schönebeck 1. The
passion and skill displayed by the two sides was so equally
matched that the game ended in a 2-2 draw. A shoot-out
followed, and saw the players from Schönebeck hold their
nerve to prevail 9-8 – and win the LEHNKERING Cup.
With the tournament at an end, the sportsmen and spectators
moved on to the MSV-Arena football stadium (the home
of the long-established MSV Duisburg club). The Business
Lounge was the venue for the evening event, which began
with the presentation ceremony. In addition to the top three
teams, the leading scorer (Ali Demir of Mannheim 1) and the
best goalkeeper (Michael Fricke of Peine) were also presented
with prizes. The fun continued with an evening meal,
music and dancing.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, CEO Cees van
Gent thanked his employees for the organization of such a
successful in-house sporting event: “Whilst other companies
commission outside event management agencies to put on
this type of event, we are both lucky and proud to have a
few dedicated employees who have organized absolutely
everything parallel to their normal duties.” He also explained
that he had used the opportunity of his last trip to the USA to
invite a team to take part in the next tournament in Germany.
Growth at LEHNKERING focuses on both its business
operations and staff events, and van Gent’s outlook for the
coming year is a positive one: “As a result of this fantastic
event and the glowing feedback we have received from participants,
it would give me great pleasure to continue the
expansion of this important LEHNKERING event next year.
We have already received a number of registrations for next
year‘s tournament, and are particularly pleased that our colleagues
from the USA will be taking part for the first time.”

Газовоз - несбыточная
мечта Газпрома
03.05.2010 15:32
Голландская Lehnkering
приняла от голландского
же судостроителя TeamCo SHIPY-
