The autopsy disclosedcor<strong>on</strong>ary artery disease, right ventriculardysplasia, and lymphocytic myocarditis.All of these c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s may result in abnormalelectrical activity in the heart. The death wasruled a drowning due to a cardiac event.C<strong>on</strong>tributing factors/significant diagnosesincluded dysplasia of the right ventricle of theheart and lymphocytic myocarditis.01-72 Quarry dive with poor visibilityand buddy separati<strong>on</strong>Cause of Death: DrowningThis 44-year-old male had advanced openwatercertificati<strong>on</strong> and an unknown amountof experience. He and a dive buddy made ashore entry into a quarry where visibility wasnoted to be poor. There were also two diveinstructors in the group. The decedent’sbuddy was less experienced and began topanic after developing equipment problems.The decedent went to get assistance and wasnot seen again during the dive. Eventually thedive buddy and two instructors surfaced. Thedecedent’s body was found the next day. Anautopsy report was not made available, butthe medical examiner ruled the cause of deathto be drowning. C<strong>on</strong>tributing factor/significantdiagnosis included hypertensi<strong>on</strong>.01-73 Diver with cor<strong>on</strong>ary artery diseaseused poorly maintained equipmentCause of Death: DrowningThis 40-year-old certified experienced diverwas making a dive with another diver to lookfor fishing lures in a freshwater p<strong>on</strong>d. Thedecedent reportedly was uncomfortable inwater deeper than 20 feet (6 meters). The twodivers went down to 12-15 feet (3.6-4.5 meters)and separated, according to a prearrangeddive plan. Witnesses saw the decedent surfaceand heard him call for help. The diver thenpartially went back below the surface in a“fins up” attitude. Some fishermen came to hisaid, but resuscitati<strong>on</strong> efforts were unsuccessful.An equipment evaluati<strong>on</strong> revealed thatthe decedent’s regulator was in poor repairand failed in the closed positi<strong>on</strong> (unusual for aregulator) due to a loose screw. The buoyancycompensator could not be inflated, and therewere weights in the pockets. The decedent didnot have a depth gauge, and the mouthpiece<strong>on</strong> the sec<strong>on</strong>d stage of the regulator had holesin it. He apparently did minimal equipmentmaintenance. The autopsy revealed changesc<strong>on</strong>sistent with drowning as well as cor<strong>on</strong>aryartery disease and an enlarged heart.C<strong>on</strong>tributing factors/significant diagnosesincluded cardiomegaly, cor<strong>on</strong>ary atherosclerosis,and fatty liver.Proximate Cause: Drowning /Insufficient Air01-01 Experienced cave diver runs out of air,toxicology positive for drugsCause of Death: Drowning due toinsufficient air and entrapment in caveThis 40-year-old male was a very experiencedcertified cave diver who was mapping out acomplex cave system using mixed gas. Thedive was to a maximum depth of 100 feet (30meters), and he ran out of breathing gas. Thedecedent’s body was recovered 150 feet (45meters) from a fresh set of tanks that he hadstaged for use during the dive. In additi<strong>on</strong> tochanges c<strong>on</strong>sistent with drowning, the autopsyrevealed toxicology positive for codeineand cannabinoids.
