Figure 71 shows the chr<strong>on</strong>ic health c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s reported by thedivers sampled for PDE in 2001. Seas<strong>on</strong>al allergy was the most frequentlyreported c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> in our sample (13.5 percent). This wasfollowed by orthopedic problems (12 percent). The term “orthopedic”refers to any b<strong>on</strong>e- or joint-related c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> or injury. Flu oracute infecti<strong>on</strong>s were reported in 7.5 percent of divers, despite ageneral agreement that divers with these c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s should abstainfrom diving. Chr<strong>on</strong>ic ear and sinus problems were reported in 4percent of divers. As is c<strong>on</strong>sistent with the prevalence of asthma inthe general populati<strong>on</strong>, 3.5 percent of divers reported having sufferedasthma in the past. In c<strong>on</strong>trast to this, <strong>on</strong>ly 1.16 percent of thesampled divers had diabetes, which is a significantly smaller proporti<strong>on</strong>than in the general populati<strong>on</strong>. Previous DCS was reportedby 1.46 percent of participants. Forty-eight percent of participantsdenied any chr<strong>on</strong>ic or acute health problem.
