The AccentSpring 2008 EditionZac Humphrey and Katie KozmaFrom the Desks of your Western District Presidents!First off, we would like to express how honored we are to beselected to serve the Western District this upcoming year. Weboth have many ideas, goals, and visions to continue to move ourDistrict forward in a positive manner, but we would also love tohear your ideas because we feel that the best way to serve ourBrothers and Sisters is by knowing exactly what you want fromyour District Council.Service/Music/Leadership:In Tau Beta Sigma one of our main purposes as stated inthe mission statement is to serve collegiate bands. It is also achief aim or ours to promote music as well asleadership within our colleges and universities.With the success that we have had in the past two years, I believe that continuing to implementservice projects that illustrate music and leadership into district events is extremely important. Iplan on continuing to make this happen with the help of the elected officers as well as your ideas.Communication:Communication is one of the most important aspects of making organizations as rewarding aspossible for every member. Not only does it strengthen our bond, but it increases the love we havefor each other. The improvement of communication within in the district begins with having respectfor every member within the district. I have found that over the past two years the communicationand support from the district council has improved the districts level of communication on a verypositive note and I would like to continue with this trend, but there is still room for improvement.To offer up a communication solution, I plan to have monthly meetings with the chapter presidentsover aim chats and through phone conference calls. I would like to communicate with District Officersfrom other Districts to exchange ideas and hopefully gain some new and exciting project ideas. Zacplans on initiating the Buddy Chapters Program to the Kappa Kappa Psi Chapters in the WesternDistrict and from this we plan on implementing a Joint Buddy Chapters Program. We feel that theBuddy Chapters Program has been developed to strengthen our bonds of Brotherhood and Sisterhoodas well as district communication despite the many miles that separate each of our chapters. It willbe a fun and exciting way to continue to make it known that THE BEST ARE IN THE WEST!District Involvement:I plan on truly encouraging district involvement not only at district events such as DistrictLeadership Conference, State Days, and Conventions, but also outside of these events. I plan oncarrying out this endeavor by continuing to utilize the current program chairs as well as making theWestern District more aware of the events that are going on throughout the district. Such eventsinclude degree dates and retreats as well as dates for fundraisers or service projects being put on byindividual chapters. My goal is to compile all of the dates for these specific happening and use the WDwebsite as well as the newly created Buddy Chapters facebook group to make such announcements.Personally, I plan on being as involved as I can as well, by making chapter visits. I feel that it is veryimportant to give each chapter personal attention and support because it is this support that canhelp chapters in need become more organized and more involved. I was thrilled to be able to visitBeta Omicron, Gamma Kappa, Alpha Chi, and both Omega Chapters over my spring break and I lookforward to the many adventures that are in store for me as a District Officer.Page 5
The AccentSpring 2008 EditionNational Honors in the Western District!Kappa Kappa Psi’s J Lee Burke Student Achievement AwardAt WDC 2008, James Llamas, Western District Vice President 2007-2008, was awarded the J Lee Burke Student Achievement Award.The J Lee Burke Student Achievement Award is awarded to studentswho have “made outstanding contributions to the college bandsand the Fraternity. Since the award’s beginning in 1991, only 5members from the Western District have recieved such an honor.Congratulations James!Tau Beta Sigma’s Baton AwardJackie Ellis and Mary Anne Schmitt of the Epsilon Kappa Chapterat UCLA were both awarded the Baton, Tau Beta Sigma’s highesthonor. Not only is it rare for more than one member of the samedistrict to recieve the award, Jackie and Mary Anne are from thesame chapter and candidate class. This is the second year in arow that two members of the same class of Epsilon Kappa havebeen awarded the Baton. Congratulations Jackie and Mary Anne!Page 6
