REP 12/NFSDU 1291. With reference to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> definiti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> complementary feeding period, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Representative <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> WHOindicated that for children 6 - 24 m<strong>on</strong>ths <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scientific evidence available indicates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a dem<strong>on</strong>stratedneed for complementary foods with certain energy <strong>and</strong> nutrient density without which morbidity <strong>and</strong>mortality would be increased. Bey<strong>on</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> age <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 24 m<strong>on</strong>ths, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> need for such foods has not beendem<strong>on</strong>strated. The WHO agreed that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following sentence could be included in 96bis as a committeeagreement similar to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following text "The committee agreed to insert a footnote referring to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2003 <strong>and</strong>2005 WHO guiding principles documents in additi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2002 WHO report <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a global c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong>".92. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> agreed that complementary foods can be used for older infants <strong>and</strong> young children 6to 24 m<strong>on</strong>ths <strong>and</strong> bey<strong>on</strong>d. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> also agreed to insert in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> footnote references to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2003 <strong>and</strong>2005 WHO guiding principles documents in additi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2002 WHO report <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a global c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong>.4. Suitable raw materials <strong>and</strong> ingredients93. In secti<strong>on</strong> 4.1.2.1 it was clarified that protein c<strong>on</strong>tent is at least 20% <strong>on</strong> a dry weight basis.94. In secti<strong>on</strong> 4.1.2.3 <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> text <strong>on</strong> phytoestrogens was amended for clarificati<strong>on</strong> purposes <strong>and</strong> to make itmore general, as it did not apply <strong>on</strong>ly to soybean.95. As regards secti<strong>on</strong> 4.1.3 Oil seed flours <strong>and</strong> oil seed protein products, some delegati<strong>on</strong>s expressed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>view that some defatted oilseed flours <strong>and</strong> protein isolates were not fit for human c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> should bedeleted, especially defatted cott<strong>on</strong>seed flour, which is a by-product <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cott<strong>on</strong> industry <strong>and</strong> is comm<strong>on</strong>lyused as animal feed or fertiliser. It was however recalled that this product had been included in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> list as itwas used for human c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> in some countries. The text was amended to clarify that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> products insecti<strong>on</strong> 4.1.3 could be used if produced <strong>and</strong> appropriately processed for human c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>.96. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> asked <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Representative <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> FAO to provide updated informati<strong>on</strong> at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next sessi<strong>on</strong><strong>on</strong> current references for producing <strong>and</strong> processing various seeds, legumes <strong>and</strong> pulses from FAO <strong>and</strong> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rauthoritative sources to update to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> secti<strong>on</strong>97. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> noted a proposal to place groundnuts in square brackets due to allergenic reacti<strong>on</strong>s,however it was recalled that groundnuts are an important ingredient <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> local diet in several regi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were retained in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> list.98. Following a proposal to add o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r oilseeds to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> list, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> text was amended to make it clear that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>list provided <strong>on</strong>ly examples <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> comm<strong>on</strong>ly used oil seeds, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore countries could use o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r edibleoilseeds available to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m.99. In reply to some questi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> safety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> raw materials <strong>and</strong> possible c<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong>, especiallyby mycotoxins, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Secretariat recalled that several codes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> practice developed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>C<strong>on</strong>taminants in Foods can provide guidance to governments in this area, especially <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Code <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Practice for<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Reducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aflatoxin C<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> in Peanuts (CAC/RCP 55-2004) <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Code <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>Practice for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Reducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mycotoxin C<strong>on</strong>taminati<strong>on</strong> in Cereals (CAC/RCP 51-2003). Itwas agreed to insert <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se references in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relevant secti<strong>on</strong>s.100. In secti<strong>on</strong> 4.1.4, it was agreed that “derived protein c<strong>on</strong>centrates” from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> animal source foodsmenti<strong>on</strong>ed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> secti<strong>on</strong> could be used <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> text was amended accordingly.101. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> agreed with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> proposal from some delegati<strong>on</strong>s to include a new secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> fruit <strong>and</strong>vegetables as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y can be good sources <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> micr<strong>on</strong>utrients <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir additi<strong>on</strong> can be technologically feasible.102. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> noted that <strong>on</strong>e delegati<strong>on</strong> proposed that vitamins <strong>and</strong> minerals should be included.4.2 O<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r ingredients103. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> agreed to add a reference to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> additives used in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> St<strong>and</strong>ard for Canned BabyFoods <strong>and</strong> to align <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> secti<strong>on</strong> with text <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> additives secti<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> St<strong>and</strong>ard for Processed Cereal BasedFoods in order to ensure c<strong>on</strong>sistency.5. Technologies for <strong>and</strong> effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> processing104. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> agreed with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> proposal from an Observer to include a reference to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Code <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>Practice for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Acrylamide in Foods (CAC/RCP 67-2009) in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relevant secti<strong>on</strong>.
