The Representative <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> FAO informed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> committee about several current FAO activities such as ameeting <strong>on</strong> nutriti<strong>on</strong> informati<strong>on</strong>, educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> communicati<strong>on</strong> for 19 Latin American <strong>and</strong> Caribbeancountries, to be held in El Salvador in December 2011<strong>and</strong> an internati<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>ference <strong>on</strong> diet <strong>and</strong> activityassessment methods, to be held in Rome in May 2012. FAO is publishing a West African food compositi<strong>on</strong>table, a protein quality expert report, a book <strong>on</strong> milk <strong>and</strong> dairy products. With funds from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> GermanMinistry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Food, Agriculture <strong>and</strong> C<strong>on</strong>sumer Protecti<strong>on</strong>, FAO is developing a pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>al trainingprogramme for nutriti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> communicati<strong>on</strong>. A new strategy for all nutriti<strong>on</strong> work in FAO is beingdeveloped <strong>and</strong> should be finalized in 2012.19. In reply to a questi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Representative indicated that updated data from countries <strong>on</strong> foodcompositi<strong>on</strong> could be provided to INFOODS or through FAO regi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fices.20. The NUGAG Subgroup <strong>on</strong> Micr<strong>on</strong>utrients finalized <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>guidelines <strong>on</strong> vitamin A supplementati<strong>on</strong> for different populati<strong>on</strong> groups as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> guidelines <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> multiple micr<strong>on</strong>utrient powders for home fortificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> foods, ir<strong>on</strong> supplementati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> safety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ir<strong>on</strong>interventi<strong>on</strong>s for children <strong>and</strong> pregnant women living in areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> high malaria transmissi<strong>on</strong>, vitamin D <strong>and</strong>calcium supplementati<strong>on</strong>. The Subgroup <strong>on</strong> Micr<strong>on</strong>utrients is now reviewing various fortificati<strong>on</strong> guidelines.The NUGAG Subgroup <strong>on</strong> Diet <strong>and</strong> Health is planning to finalize <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> review <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scientific evidence <strong>and</strong>updating recommendati<strong>on</strong>s related to total fat, sugars, sodium <strong>and</strong> potassium at its next meeting in November2011. In 2012 - 2013, this Subgroup is planning to review <strong>and</strong> update <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recommendati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> fats <strong>and</strong> fattyacids. The scope for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> work will be finalized by NUGAG. The NUGAG subgroup <strong>on</strong> Diet <strong>and</strong> Health isdeveloping guidance <strong>on</strong> severe acute malnutriti<strong>on</strong> (SAM) <strong>and</strong> moderate acute malnutriti<strong>on</strong> (MAM).23. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> recalled that its last sessi<strong>on</strong> had retained <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Proposed Draft NRVs at Step 4 <strong>and</strong> hadrequested FAO <strong>and</strong> WHO to review <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> existing daily vitamin <strong>and</strong> mineral intake reference values for 28vitamins <strong>and</strong> minerals, as well as informati<strong>on</strong> describing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis for those values. In additi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>organizati<strong>on</strong>s were asked to give an estimate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> change in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scientific evidence base since1998, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last time FAO/WHO held an expert meeting <strong>on</strong> vitamins <strong>and</strong> minerals.27. The representatives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> WHO/FAO presented <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> report <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Review <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Existing Daily Vitamin <strong>and</strong>Mineral Intake Reference Values <strong>and</strong> indicated that FAO <strong>and</strong> WHO collaborated in collecting informati<strong>on</strong>for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> review. Several methods were used to ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> requested by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Data wasretrieved from available databases, published documents, followed by examinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> original referencesfor <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se values. Nati<strong>on</strong>al authorities were c<strong>on</strong>tacted through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> WHO/FAO Regi<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong> Country Offices,<strong>and</strong> a call for data was issued through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Codex</str<strong>on</strong>g> Secretariat. They also completed a literature search <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>PubMed database for each nutrient to indicate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> change in scientific literature since 1998.28. Data were obtained from primary sources in developed <strong>and</strong> developing countries, countries withvarious nati<strong>on</strong>al income levels, <strong>and</strong> from regi<strong>on</strong>s around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> globe.
