This thesis follows on from a masters’ dissertation that assessed whether the lower area ofHouse 1 at Hamar was possibly used as a byre (Legg 2007). This study will make use ofexisting and new soil samples from excavated byres and longhouses on Unst and surveysamples from the surrounding farmsteads and landscape. Analysis for the project willinclude:• Measurements of organic and inorganic phosphorus fractions.• Lipid analysis to be conducted on selected soil samples.• Geophysical surveys to study the layout of the farmsteads and also extending surveywork into the landscape.• Geographical information systems to spatially portray and integrate the differentdata sets.To date 55 samples have been collected from a hand auger survey surrounding house 2along with the 42 samples taken for the Masters dissertation. The survey samples will beanalysed for organic and inorganic phosphorus fractions, loss on ignition and soil pH.
