Crash SeverityDefinition: The severity <strong>of</strong> a crash is based on the most severe injury to any person involved in thecrash.It may be helpful to fill out the injury severity codes for all persons involved first. This will helpyou determine the most severe overall injury <strong>of</strong> the crash.The following definitions will help you to determine the injury level <strong>of</strong> the persons involved in thecrash.1. NO INJURY (PROPERTY DAMAGE ONLY) – is a situation in which there is no reason tobelieve that any person suffered any bodily harm as a result <strong>of</strong> the motor vehicle crash. Thisincludes confusion, excitement, anger, and internal injuries unknown to the person until afterleaving the scene. Possible amendment if reported at a later date.2. POSSIBLE INJURY – Complaint <strong>of</strong> pain without visible injury.3. NON-INCAPACITATION INJURY – Any injury, other than a fatal injury or an incapacitatinginjury, that is evident to observers at the scene <strong>of</strong> the crash in which the injury occurred. Example:contusions (bruises), laceration, bloody nose.4. INCAPACITATING INJURY – Any injury, other than a fatal injury, which prevents the injuredperson from walking, driving or normally continuing the activities the person was capable <strong>of</strong>performing before the injury occurred. Often defined as “needing help from the scene.”5. FATAL – Any injury that results in death within a 30-day period after the crash occurred.Determinations <strong>of</strong> severity are made at the scene <strong>of</strong> the crash. The only exception is when a personsubsequently dies as a result <strong>of</strong> crash injuries. In these cases, a five (5) for “fatal” must be enteredon the form if it has not been entered previously. Additionally, the <strong>of</strong>ficer should send an amendedcrash report form to Driver License Division.Enter the appropriate two-digit code for the most severe injured person in Box 1:01 No Injury/PDO02 Possible Injury03 Non-Incapacitating Injury04 Incapacitating Injury05 FatalRationale: Provides a classification <strong>of</strong> the severity <strong>of</strong> the crash for the user without having tosearch through the person-level records. This simplifies the use <strong>of</strong> the crash data file for producingreports by crash severity.43
