GLOSSARYDEFINITIONS OF TERMS:ACCELERATION LANE - A speed-change lane for the purpose <strong>of</strong> enabling a vehicleentering a roadway to increase its speed to a rate at which it can safely merge with through traffic,proving necessary merging distance, and giving the main roadway traffic necessary time anddistance to make appropriate adjustments.ALLEY - A street or highway intended to provide access to the rear or side <strong>of</strong> lots or buildingsin urban districts and not intended for the purpose <strong>of</strong> through vehicular traffic.AMBULANCE - See AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY VEHICLE.ARTERIAL STREET - Any United States or state-numbered route, controlled-accesshighway, or other major radial or circumferential street or highway designated by local authoritieswithin their respective jurisdictions as part <strong>of</strong> a major arterial systems <strong>of</strong> streets or highways.ASPHALT/BLACKTOP - A road paved with a mixture <strong>of</strong> gravel and a dark colored, solidbituminous substance.AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY VEHICLE -Vehicles <strong>of</strong> a fire department, police vehicles,and such ambulances and such other publicly or privately owned vehicles as are designated by theCommissioner <strong>of</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Safety</strong>.BICYCLE - Every device propelled by human power upon which any person may ride, havingtwo tandem wheels, either <strong>of</strong> which is more than 12 inches in diameter.BICYCLIST - Anyone riding a bicycle, tricycle, unicycle, or in any trailers or sidecars attachedto a bicycle.BUS (MOTOR COACH) - Every motor vehicle designed for carrying more than 16passengers (including the driver) and used for the transportation <strong>of</strong> persons; every motor vehicle,other than a taxicab, designed and used for the transportation <strong>of</strong> persons for compensation.CANCELLATION - The termination by the Division <strong>of</strong> a license issued through error or fraudor for which consent under Section 53-3-211 has been withdrawn.CENTERLINE - A line indicating the division <strong>of</strong> the roadway between traffic traveling inopposite directions.COMMERCIAL DRIVER - Every person who is employed by another for the principalpurpose <strong>of</strong> driving a motor vehicle; every person who drives a school bus transporting schoolchildren or nursery school children; or any motor vehicle when in use for the transportation <strong>of</strong>persons or property for compensation; and every person who is employed by another for theprincipal purpose <strong>of</strong> driving a motor vehicle, operating any motor vehicle or combination <strong>of</strong>vehicles having a combined gross laden weight in excess <strong>of</strong> 10,000 pounds.COLLISION CRASH - Any crash involving a motor vehicle in transport, in which the motorvehicle, its load, its parts, or objects set in motion by the motor vehicle, collide with other things,such as other motor vehicles, railway trains, other road vehicles, pedestrians, animals or objectsfixed, movable or moving.CONTROLLED-ACCESS HIGHWAY - Every highway, street, or roadway in respect towhich owners or occupants <strong>of</strong> abutting lands and other persons have no legal right <strong>of</strong> access to orfrom the same except at such points only and in such manner as may be determined by the publicauthority having jurisdiction over such highway, street or roadway.CRASH – An event involving a motor vehicle that produces injury or damage.91
