This method is used for shortterm storage of 2-3 months only in upland and lowlandareas of North eastern states. In this storage, followingpractices are found as beneficial :1. Cover the potato beds with grass which provideshade and cooling effect to the potatoes in uplandareas.2. Cover the potato beds with paddy crop whichprovide shade and cooling effect to the potatoes in lowland areas.b) Heap storage :In this method, potatoes are heaped under the shadeof trees, where 6-30 tonnes of potatoes can be stored. Theheaps are covered with a layer of available straw material(about 30cm thick). This is a popular storage methodpracticed in U.P, Maharashtra and Karnataka. In heapstorage, following practices are recommended for safestorage:In situ storageSelect storage site in places like under the shade oftrees, preferably in orchard.Storage in Heaps31
