Academic Regulations 2010/11Part 1– Framework and Governance1.13. QMUL reserves the right to amend any programme of study or module or withdrawany module, at any time, as it deems necessary. Normally, amendments toprogrammes of study and modules are enacted for the next cohort to join theprogramme or group to take the module. Where an amendment to a programmeand/or module has an effect on students currently registered for it, those students areformally notified of the change and provided with an opportunity to object to it shouldthey wish to do so. Once approved programme withdrawals are not enacted untilthere are no students registered on the programme.Programme Regulations1.14. Each programme of study has its own regulations that are approved by Senate, or itsdelegated authority. Programme regulations are a sub-set of the AcademicRegulations and apply to the specified programme(s). Programme regulations arepresented in the relevant programme specification and cover requirements foradmission, curriculum content and outcomes, module diets, methods of assessmentand any further requirements for progression or award.1.15. Programme and module regulations do not diverge from the standard academicregulations for QMUL, except where there is good reason and where SpecialRegulations have been approved by Senate, or its delegated authority. Programmeregulations are intended to provide a greater level of detail and amplify the AcademicRegulations. Where programme regulations are silent in any regard, default to theAcademic Regulations normally occurs.Module Regulations1.16. Module regulations specify the requirements to take, complete and pass a specificmodule. Each module has approved assessment methods; these are detailed in theModule Proposal/Amendment and approved by Senate, or its delegated authority.Where the assessment for a module comprises more than one element ofassessment, the weighting to be applied to each element of assessment is stated inthe Module Proposal/Amendment. Any other requirements that must be met to passthe module are detailed and approved.Designation of Special Regulations1.17. Special regulations 3 are academic regulations for individual programmes of study thatdiverge from the standard Academic Regulations for QMUL. Where there is alegitimate academic rationale, or a specific requirement set down by a professional, statutory or regulatory body, or a joint or collaborative programme requires it theprogramme regulations may vary from the standard Academic Regulations. SpecialRegulations are designated as such through the programme approval process andapproved by Senate, or its delegated authority.1.18. Approved Special Regulations are detailed in Part 7 of the Academic RegulationsSome programmes that lead to award of BA have special regulations that state thatthe regulations for LLB apply.3 Since 2007-08, where special regulations applied to an award not programme, these have beenincorporated into the overall Academic Regulations for the College (eg LLB, MBBS and BDS).Page 11 of 110
