<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Regulations</strong> <strong>2010</strong>/<strong>11</strong>Part 3 – <strong>Regulations</strong> for the conduct of assessmentProfessional Capability3.73. The design of assessment to measure professional capability is the responsibility ofthe relevant internal examiner/module organiser in accordance with the approvedmodule specification <strong>and</strong> regulations. Where required, this will also be subject toapproval of the relevant Subject Examination Board, External Examiner(s) <strong>and</strong>Professional Body.3.74. Students are required to adhere to any published deadlines or dates for assessmentto measure professional capability.3.75. Any student who due to medical or other reason outside of their control, is unable tosubmit or sit assessment designed to measure should submit a claim for extenuatingcircumstances supported by relevant documentary evidence.Extenuating Circumstances3.76. Extenuating circumstances are unforeseen <strong>and</strong> unplanned circumstances that havehad a negative impact on a student’s ability to undertake or complete anyassessment.3.77. Students are responsible for submitting coursework on time, for presentingthemselves for written examinations at the appropriate time <strong>and</strong> place, <strong>and</strong> forsubmitting information on extenuating circumstances. Events such as misreading thetimetable, forgetting to set the alarm clock, or misjudging the time needed to reviseare not extenuating circumstances3.78. The occurrence of a series of examinations in close succession cannot be consideredas an extenuating circumstance as this is bound to occur with 1000 examinationstimetabled over 6 weeks.3.79. A student must present extenuating circumstances, in writing, as soon as possibleafter the assessment (if not known in advance) <strong>and</strong> in any case no less than 24 hoursbefore the meeting of the relevant Examination Board. Submissions by staff orother students cannot be accepted on behalf of a student. The submission mustbe supported by documentary evidence; where evidence is awaited, the board c<strong>and</strong>efer a decision, <strong>and</strong> authorise its Chair to act.3.80. Where an undergraduate student is unable to meet the requirements for progressiondue to non completion of assessment 14 <strong>and</strong> there are valid, accepted extenuatingcircumstances, the Subject Examination Board can award a first sit in the affectedmodule(s) which are taken during the late summer examination period.3.81. Where a student is unable to meet the requirements for award due to non completionof assessment <strong>and</strong> there are valid, accepted extenuating circumstances, the SubjectExamination Board can award a first sit or retake in the affected module(s) to betaken during the following academic year or request a suspension of regulations toallow a first sit(s) in the late summer examination period.3.82. Where a student has met the requirements for award but due to valid, acceptedextenuating circumstances was unable to sit or submit all or some of his/her final year14 Non completion of assessment refers to absence from an invigilated examination or practicalassessment, or non submission of coursework or of a dissertation/project.Page 49 of <strong>11</strong>0
