Uganda had no MDA because of internal unrest.MID-TERM ASSESSMENT OFMICROFILARAEMIA REDUCTION 2ImplementedMDA in2000GPELF recommends that before the first MDA round, baseline parasitological indicators — microfilaria (mf)prevalence and mf density levels — should be collected insentinel sites chosen from within the MDA IUs and thatbefore the third and fifth rounds the same sentinel sitesshould carry out a parasitological survey to compare thedata obtained with that of the baseline survey, thus enablingan assessment to be made of the impact of MDA.In 2003, reports on mid-term assessments were receivedfrom sentinel sites in 13 countries. The results providedby each of these countries at the end of 2003 revealeda significant reduction in mf prevalence in most of thesentinel sites.ImplementedMDA in2001African PRG (Table 1.6)ImplementedMDA in2002ImplementedMDA in2003African 39 4 6 9 8American 7 0 1 2 3Eastern Mediterranean 3 1 1 2 2Mekong Plus 12 1 2 5 6PacELF 17 6 9 11 13South-Asia 5 0 3 3 4Total 83 12 22 32 36Burkina Faso. According to a mapping survey carriedout in 2000, all 53 IUs in Burkina Faso, with an estimatedpopulation of 12 million, are at risk of LF. MDA startedin 2001 in four IUs in Gaoua in the southern part of thecountry using co-administration of albendazole plusivermectin, covering 431 399 people. All four IUs havenow completed three MDA rounds. Two sentinel sitesin Dano and Gaoua (Gora and Perigban) were chosento monitor the 4 IUs, where mf prevalence was 14.2%and 11.4% respectively and mf density 752 mf/ml and462 mf/ml respectively. The survey carried out beforethe third round revealed an mf prevalence of 8.2% and9.9% respectively and mf density of 638.0 mf/ml and851 mf/ml respectively, which, compared to the baselinedata of the sentinel sites, indicated a reduction of 42.3%and 13.2% respectively in mf prevalence.Chapter 1 Progress of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis2Taken from Weekly epidemiological record, No 40,2004,79,358-365.
