VIET NAM89Endemicity statusEndemicNon-endemicUncertainAnnual Report on <strong>Lymphatic</strong> <strong>Filariasis</strong> 2003LF is one of the public health problems for the populationof approximately 80 million. More than 1.48 millionpeople are considered <strong>to</strong> be at risk. The prevalence ofLF clinical manifestations evaluated recently in sentinelsites is higher than that of mf in the blood.The administrative area designated as an IU in the countryis the district and not the province. Mapping is beingfinalized: 12 districts were identified as LF-endemic andsix of them qualified for MDA (Binh Luc and Phu Cu <strong>int</strong>he north and Bac Ai, Dien Khanh, Khanh Vin and NinhHoa in the centre). Based on current mapping, the atriskpopulation was estimated at 1.48 million.The first round of MDA under the national PELF, usingalbendazole and DEC, began in 2003 in two IUs with areported coverage of 89.7% (range: 93.2% <strong>to</strong> 93.8%). Thesecond round will be in 2004, targeting around 680 000people.Between 2002 and 2003, 1290 drug distribu<strong>to</strong>rs weretrained, and approximately half of them participated <strong>int</strong>raining in disability prevention and control.The national PELF is managed overall by the ministryof health and technically by the National Instituteof Malariology, Parasi<strong>to</strong>logy and En<strong>to</strong>mology (NIMPE).WHO provided technical support and facilitated funding:the national PELF is fully funded by the Bill andMelinda Gates Foundation.
