The LF clinical manifestations evaluated insentinel sites show a hydrocele and lymphoedema prevalenceas high as 1% and 2%, respectively.The administrative or health division designated as anIU is the prefecture. The mapping of LF, completed in2000, showed that seven out of 30 prefectures are consideredLF-endemic. The first round of MDA using albendazoleand ivermectin began in 2000 in Binah, situatedin the region of Kara. In 2001 and 2002, during the secondround, three and six IUs, respectively, were coveredwith the co-administration of the two drugs. Under thethird round, in 2003, 1.06 million people were coveredwith a reported coverage of 80.6%.Mapping with ICT cards demonstrated an LF prevalenceof 1% in Kozah, the new prefecture that began MDA in2003. The mf prevalence found in the six sentinel siteswas as high as 22%. Between 2000 and 2003, 3025 drugdistributors were trained, and 240 people were giventraining in disability prevention and control.The LF elimination programme is implemented by theministry of health, assisted by WHO, and DFID. Healthand Development International, Norway, provided technicaland financial support.
