Both projects involve providing turnkeyservices from design through supply, project management andinstallation. After their successful completion of an A380 upgradeworks project at Tullamarine International Airport during 2006Thorn has been awarded a contract for the next major upgrade.This is the first contract to be undertaken by the newly mergedThorn <strong>Airfield</strong> <strong>Lighting</strong> and <strong>Safegate</strong> International, a deal whichbrought together two industry leading companies to pursueprojects such as this.<strong>Safegate</strong>’s <strong>Airfield</strong> Smart Power technology and SafeControlsystem will be utilized to provide comprehensive addressablelighting control and monitoring of all stop bars and taxiway leadonlights. The scope includes the addition of 14 new stop barlocations and more than 60 constant current regulators. Theproject, which commenced this month, is scheduled forcompletion before the end of this year. Melbourne's secondairport, Essendon, is also undergoing major upgrade works to itsairfield lighting systems, airfield lighting equipment rooms andcontrol systems. Thorn won the highly competitive tender forEssendon largely due to their previous history of successfuldelivery and responsive after-sales service and support.The scope of work for the project involves lighting two runways,taxiway lighting and a new electrical substation. Thorn has set upa fully-staffed on-site project office to carry out these works. Theproject is scheduled for completion in October 2007. Theannouncement of the contract awards reinforces Thorn’s marketposition in Australia as the major player in the airfield lightingindustry. The successful completion of these milestone projectsare expected to lead to more and larger airfield opportunities for<strong>Safegate</strong>/Thorn in Australia and beyond.
