4.8.2 Benefits <strong>of</strong> This ToolboxCommunities have great interest in tourism because it is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> Africa’s visible industries.<strong>The</strong> increased interest, and the fact that tourism can have a daily impact on our lives,encourages people to respond to its positive and perceived (if not in reality) negative impacts.Consultation and public participation provides an opportunity to involve the community in theplanning, management and marketing <strong>of</strong> tourism so that Visitors, Industry, Community and theEnvironment (VICE) can maximise the benefits and minimise potential negative aspects.Effective community consultation can: Assist tourism to support a community’s economic and social goals (communityoutcomes) Provide confirmation for the municipality that an initiative is appropriate Provide support for new initiatives Increase the awareness <strong>of</strong> tourism within the community Increase the pride in the destination and what it has to <strong>of</strong>fer the visitor Create a welcoming attitude to visitors from the host community<strong>The</strong> Municipal Structures Act (2000) through the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) recognisesthe need to involve the community in local government planning not only for tourism, but for awide range <strong>of</strong> services that local government is directly or indirectly responsible for.4.8.3 Resources<strong>The</strong> Figures below identify the potential pros and cons <strong>of</strong> tourism for a community.Potential Benefits <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> for Communities46
