1.3 Environmental Health and the Western GroupRegionThe Western Group Environmental Health Service is a public sector statutory bodythat exists to provide support to and monitor the activities of the five district councilEnvironmental Health Departments located in the western region of Northern Ireland (NI).The district councils located within the Western Group region are: Derry City Council,Strabane District Council, Omagh District Council, Fermanagh District Council and LimavadyBorough Council (see Table 1 below). Each of these councils participated fully in thisresearch. In 2005 the Chinese Welfare Associationreported that almost 40% of the Chinese community in Northern Ireland were born in theUnited Kingdom, with approximately 50% originating from Hong Kong and the remaining 10%coming from China and countries such as Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. Like anyother community, diversity in language, attitudes, beliefs and culture exist (Chinese WelfareAssociation, 2005).1.5 Chinese Catering Premises in the West of NITable 2 on page 9 contains the number of Chinese catering premises (restaurants andtakeaways) operating within each of the five participating district council areas of the westernregion of NI. Table 2 also contains the number of associated Chinese employers operatingwithin the catering sector in each council area.
