If no alarmvalue has been entered the LCD will indicate .FLOWTOTAL Press and hold both keys for three seconds andthe displayed value will begin to flash.Press and hold for 3 secondsUse the and keys to select the desiredalarm value. Press and hold both keys for onesecond to save this new value to memory and toexit this function. The display will indicate and then the new value. The arrow pointing at the alarm bell will beactivated.Alarm activationIf the fuel remaining value drops below the fuelalarm value, the alarm will sound and the alarmarrow will flash. Press any key to mute the alarm. The alarmarrow will continue to flash as long as the alarmcondition remains.Resetting the TRIP LOG or the TOTAL LOGTo reset a log, press the key until the displayindicates the name of the log to be reset.Press and hold both keys for three seconds.Display will show or for 2 secondsbefore resetting to zero.Press and hold for 3 seconds The trip log value may be reset without changingthe total log value. If the total log is reset to zero, then the trip logwill automatically reset to zero.Note: If the total log exceeds 999 then both itand the trip log will be reset to zero.6Northstar Explorer F210 Installation and Operation Manual

2 Instrument SetupSelecting units of measureThe Explorer F210 will indicate fuel values inLitres, Imperial gallons or US gallons. To changethe current setting perform the following steps:1. Power up the unit while holding down thekey.FLOWTOTALHold down during power up2. When the unit is on, release the key. Thedisplay will indicate the current display unitwith:8U1Imperial Gallons8U2US Gallons8U3Litres3. To select the display unit desired, use theand keys to change the value.4. To exit this mode, press and hold both theand keys simultaneously for one second.CalibrationThe fuel transducer supplied with the fuel flowmeter will provide readings at better than 5%accuracy. Individual calibration will increase thislevel of accuracy to better than 2% over a fuelflow range of 10.0 to 120 litres per hour. Use thefollowing steps to calibrate your fuel flow meter:1. Reset the total log value to zero (see previouspage).2. Use a known amount of fuel. The larger theamount the more accurate the calibration willbe.3. Take note of the actual volume of fuel usedand the fuel used indicated by the total log. Ifthese two totals are different the instrumentmay require calibration.4. Press and hold the key while applyingpowerFLOWHold down during power up5. Release the key. Display will flash currenttotal log value.6. Use the or keys to make the displayindicate the actual volume of fuel used.7. Press both keys simultaneously for 1 sec toexit.Press and hold to exitInformation will now be indicated in the selecteddisplay unit.Press and hold for 1 secondThe fuel flow meter is now calibrated.Northstar Explorer F210 Installation and Operation Manual 7

3 InstallationWARNINGIT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO INSTALL A FUEL FILTER BETWEEN THE FUEL FLOW TRANSDUCERAND THE FUEL TANK. THIS FILTER WILL CATCH LARGER PARTICLES OF DIRT FROM THEFUEL TANK AND PREVENT THE FINE GAUZE FILTER IN THE FUEL FLOW TRANSDUCER FROMBECOMING BLOCKED AS THIS MAY DAMAGE THE ENGINE.LocationThe Explorer F210 is designed for above or belowdeck installation. Select a position that is:• On a flat surface• At least 300mm (12”) from a compass• At least 500mm (20”) from any radio• Easy to read by the helmsman and crew• Protected from physical damage• Accessible to electrical cable connectionsMountingThe instrument panel must be 3mm to 19mm( 1 / 8” to 3 / 4”) in thickness.• Drill a 51mm (2”) hole in the instrument panel.• Remove brackets and insert the instrumentso the back is flush with the instrument panel.• Slide the bracket over the instrument andtighten the mounting nut until secure.InstrumentPanel51mm (2”)HoleMounting NutMountingBracketInstrumentSealingGasket8Northstar Explorer F210 Installation and Operation Manual

Wiring Connection• Keep electrical and transducer cables awayfrom alternator or other noise generatingelectrical cables. Avoid connecting theinstrument to power circuits that shareloads with ignition, alternators, inverters andradio transmitters. Electrical power supplyconnections should always be as short aspossible.BRACKET• Connect the red wire to the positive supplyvia a 1 amp fuse or a 1 amp circuit breaker.Connect the black wire to the electricalground.• Connect the fuel flow transducer to the fivepin transducer inlet cable.BUZZER600mm (24”)POWER CORDFUJI 5-PINCONNECTORRED(+) TERMINALBLACK(-) TERMINALInstallation of the fuel flow transducerThe fuel flow transducer is designed forinstallation in Coast Guard approved 9.5 mm( 3 / 8”) flexible fuel line. The transducer MUST beinstalled AFTER the main fuel filter. It should belocated well away from any area where it will beeffected by excessive heat or vibration from theengine. It is preferable to mount the transducer ina vertical position.Drain all the fuel from the flexible fuel line. Cutthe fuel line and using the fuel hose fixing clipsprovided install the transducer so that the FUELIN side of the transducer connects to the fueltank.Northstar Explorer F210 Installation and Operation Manual 9

The quantity of fuel used isautomatically subtracted from this total. Thisvalue remains in memory at power down.• Operating Voltage8 V DC to 16.5 V DC.• Operating Temperature0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F).• Current Drain70 mA max.• RF Interference

Appendix B - Troubleshooting ChartNo display:1. Check DC power connections and DCpolarity with voltmeter.2. Check fuse.No flow reading indicated:1. Check connection to flow transducer.2. Remove transducer from fuel line, blowthrough transducer, a whistling noise willindicate the turbine is rotating.Low flow reading indicated:1. Check that the gauze filter is clean. If the filteris not installed fine strands may clog up theturbine.2. Check calibration is correct.High or erratic reading:Check fuel connections are well made. Air infuel lines will cause erratic or high readings.Northstar Explorer F210 Installation and Operation Manual 11
