8Chapter 8: <strong>Supplier</strong> ContainmentLevel 1 and Level 2 ContainmentIn addition to the corrective action requirements listed above (PMCAR) a <strong>Supplier</strong> may be placedon Level 1 or Level 2 Containment (Quality or Safety) by <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> due to quality issues causedby a <strong>Supplier</strong>’s goods or services or due to safety issues involving activities of the <strong>Supplier</strong>’semployees while on <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> properties. Additionally production, environmental, or sourcingproblems could also lead to <strong>Supplier</strong> Containment.Containment - Quality is a demand by <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> to a <strong>Supplier</strong> to put in place a redundantinspection process while implementing a root cause analysis and problem resolution. Thisredundant inspection is required to take place concurrent with any in-process monitoring /inspection in place.A <strong>Supplier</strong> on Level 1 Containment - Quality may be required to perform 100% additionaltesting/inspection/sorting/observation on the material/services being supplied to <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong>. Thisadditional inspection is in addition to normal controls. This additional inspection/testing planmust be submitted to <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> for approval.A <strong>Supplier</strong> placed on Level 2 Containment - Quality may similarly be required to provide 100%additional testing/inspection/sorting/observation by a third party inspection/testing group. Theplan for this testing/inspection must be approved by <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> prior to shipping additionalmaterial to <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong>.In each instance, the <strong>Supplier</strong> shall ensure for proper job instructions, quality standards, boundarylimits, tools/equipment, training, asset care, daily charting of key process variables, and all otherrequirements as necessary to perform the additional duties.The <strong>Supplier</strong> shall hold daily meetings at the sort location to review results and ensure effectivecorrective actions. Results of the meetings and the additional inspection must be sent to theBuyer/Operating areas on an established frequency.<strong>Supplier</strong>s will be responsible for all costs associated with the containment.Lack of adequate inspection/documentation may result in <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> contracting out or performingthe containment activity with incurred costs charged back to the <strong>Supplier</strong>.<strong>Supplier</strong>s will remain on containment for a minimum of 30 days following verification ofacceptable performance.<strong>AK</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> <strong>Supplier</strong> <strong>Requirements</strong> Page 31 of 55Revised 01/13
