RetirementsDrs. John and Gail Molinari RetireDrs. John and Gail Molinari began phased retirementin June <strong>2009</strong>.Dr. John A. Molinari joined the faculty <strong>of</strong> U <strong>of</strong> D in1977 as Chair <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Microbiologyand Biochemistry. He came to <strong>Detroit</strong> from Pittsburghwhere he had been on the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dental Medicinefaculty since receiving his PhD from that institutionin 1970. Dr. Molinari developed the infection controlprogram at U <strong>of</strong> D and is recognized internationallyas a leader in dental infection control. He haslectured throughout the country and internationallyon topics related to infection control and infectiousdiseases in dentistry.Dr. Molinari has published extensively in the areas <strong>of</strong>immunology, infection control, and infectious diseases.Most recently he served as the senior author/editor <strong>of</strong>the third edition <strong>of</strong> Cottone’s Practical Infection Controlin <strong>Dentistry</strong>.He was a founding member <strong>of</strong> the Organization for Safetyand Asepsis Procedures, which promotes infection controland safety policies and practices supported by science andresearch to the global dental community. He foundedthe first dental school based sterilization monitoringservice <strong>of</strong>fering biological monitoring <strong>of</strong> dental <strong>of</strong>ficesterilizers shortly after coming to U <strong>of</strong> D in 1977.Dr. Molinari received numerous honors throughout hiscareer both for his contributions to the dental pr<strong>of</strong>essionas well as to dental education. He was recognized withhonorary membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, theMichigan Dental Association, and the <strong>Detroit</strong> DistrictDental Society. He was awarded Honorary Fellowship inthe Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College<strong>of</strong> Dentists, and the American College <strong>of</strong> Dentists.Additionally, he has received a number <strong>of</strong> other verynotable awards including the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pittsburgh<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dental Medicine Distinguished Alumnus Awardin 2007.Dr. Gail E. Brossock (Molinari) joined the U <strong>of</strong> D facultyin 1987 as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>.A dental graduate <strong>of</strong> Ohio State <strong>University</strong>, she completeda pediatric dentistry residency at OSU and then practicedfor a year in Colorado before joining the U <strong>of</strong> D faculty.She transitioned to part-time after a few years andpracticed pediatric dentistry in Flint before returning asChair <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> in 1991.She has been very active in the pediatric dentistrycommunity serving as President <strong>of</strong> the Michigan Academy<strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong> and as National Spokesperson forthe American Academy <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>. She is aFellow <strong>of</strong> the American Academy <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>,the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the InternationalCollege <strong>of</strong> Dentists.She has lectured extensively and published papers onchild abuse and neglect, traumatic injuries to the primaryand permanent dentition, and caries risk assessment.Both Dr. Molinaris will be missed at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>but plan to continue their other activities. Dr. JohnMolinari will continue to lecture, and Dr. Gail Molinariplans to continue her pediatric dental practice. They willundoubtedly stay busy with their pr<strong>of</strong>essional activitiesas well as their children and grandchildren. We wishthem well! The Leading Edge | Summer <strong>2009</strong>
