community organizations including the dental societieswhich have been a part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>’s pastsuccessful outreach activities. The other target areas forfuture MI DOOR events include the Thumb, the UpperPeninsula, the southwestern region, and the northernLower Peninsula.The organizing committee <strong>of</strong> MI DOOR was comprised<strong>of</strong> dental pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, dental and dental hygienepr<strong>of</strong>essional associations, academia, the Salvation Army,United Way, Head Start, MDCH, the Governor’s <strong>of</strong>fice,and several other stakeholders. In all, 28 differentorganizations supported the event with donations,supplies, and manpower.The goals for MI DOOR were to:■■■Provide free access to dental care for uninsuredadults while placing a high priority on patientssuffering from dental infections or pain.Raise public awareness <strong>of</strong> the increasing difficultylow-income adults and children face in accessingcritical dental care.Challenge Medicaid patients, policymakers, anddental pr<strong>of</strong>essionals to work together to improvethe oral health <strong>of</strong> those who have been promisedcare by the State <strong>of</strong> Michigan.Governor Jennifer M. Granholm was the featured speakerfor the event welcoming all who supported the day. PaulaTutman <strong>of</strong> Channel 4, WDIV, Dr. Sheila Vandenbush, OralHealth Director <strong>of</strong> the Michigan Department <strong>of</strong> CommunityHealth, and Father Gerard L. Stockhausen, President,<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Detroit</strong> Mercy, also spoke at the inauguralevent.<strong>UDM</strong>’s College <strong>of</strong> Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions and McAuley HealthCenter along with other organizations provided medicalservices on the day <strong>of</strong> the event. Dr. Vinod Miriyala,Dr. Mary Parise, Ms. Laura Wright, Dr. Diane Hoelscherand Ms. Megan Jennings as well as other <strong>UDM</strong>SD facultyand staff were involved with the logistics <strong>of</strong> the eventat Corktown campus. Approximately 35 <strong>UDM</strong>SD dentaland dental hygiene faculty members volunteered theirservices for the day.
