Geist of UDM.James R. Geist, DDS, MS, professor ofdiagnostic sciences and director of theOral and Maxillofacial Imaging Centerat UDM, gave an invited presentationentitled Cone-Beam Computed Tomography:Anatomy, Pathology, and Referral at theUniversity of Illinois College of Dentistryon February 23, 2009. The presentationwas co-sponsored by the Department ofOral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences(OMDS) and the Department ofOrthodontics at UIC. It was attended byapproximately 70 post-graduate studentsand faculty members.Hassan Oueis, DDS, PhD, adjunct clinicalassistant professor of pediatric dentistry,and Zainab Mackie, an undergraduatestudent at the University of Michigan,presented their poster Knowledge of Infantand Toddler Oral Health of Pediatriciansand Pediatric Nurses in Michigan at theThird Annual UDM Faculty and StudentResearch Symposium and Poster Fairsponsored by the University’s FacultyDevelopment Team on April 14th. Theirswas one of 70 posters and was one of 6selected for an award of a $50 gift card.New FacultyDr. Mohammad Salam joinedthe Department of BiomedicalSciences in May as an AssistantProfessor and is currently teachingimmunology. Dr. Salam comesto Detroit from the Departmentof Pediatric Dentistry at theUniversity of Alabama atBirmingham where he wasinvolved in research on ananti-caries vaccine. Originallyfrom Bangladesh, he has a BDSand postgraduate training inorthodontics from DhakaUniversity in Bangladesh. He then earned a PhD in oral microbiology andimmunology from Niigata University in Japan and subsequently completedtwo postdoctoral fellowships, one at the National Institute of InfectiousDiseases in Tokyo, Japan, and the second at the University of Alabamaat Birmingham. Dr. Salam’s wife Bibi Rahima is an advanced standingdental student in the Class of 2012. They have a 4 year old son Naveed.The Leading Edge | Summer 2009
New AppointmentsDean Mert Aksu has announced a number of newappointments in recent months. Many of these involvefaculty or administrative staff with existing appointmentswhile several are new hires.Dincer Gurun, DMD, DDS, wasnamed Chairperson of the Departmentof Restorative Dentistryafter having served as InterimChairperson since December2005. Under his leadership thedepartment made positive progressin the areas of contemporaryclinical relevance, incorporatingimplant dentistry, CAD-CAM,multi-media teaching aids and improving integration ofthe restorative sciences. We look forward to the continuedsuccess of Department of Restorative Dentistry underDr. Gurun’s guidance.Megan Jennings’, JD, role as Director of Student Affairsrecently expanded to include providing leadership andsupervision for both the Office of Admissions and theOffice of Financial Aid. Ms. Jennings has served as Directorof Student Affairs since November 2007.Salwa Atwan, BDS, MS, DDS,was named Chairperson of theDepartment of Pediatric Dentistryeffective July 6, 2009. Dr. Atwanjoined the School of Dentistry inJanuary 1996 after having served asa faculty member at the Universityof Washington School of Dentistryand subsequently receiving herDDS from the University of DetroitMercy. Dr. Atwan began her career at the School ofDentistry as Clinical Assistant Professor until she waspromoted to Clinical Associate Professor in 2000. Inaddition to her role at the University, Dr. Atwan has asuccessful private practice in Plymouth, MI.Vijay Parashar, BDS, MS, DDS, accepted a full time positionin the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the rank ofAssistant Professor effective May 11, 2009. Dr. Parasharhas been with the School of Dentistry since May 2007.Kathi Shepherd, RDH, MS, assumed full-time responsibilitiesas Director of Educational Development and OutcomesAssessment effective May 11, 2009. Prof. Shepherd joinedthe School of Dentistry in 1985 as Clinical Instructor andhas served in various leadership roles such as Coordinatorof the Dental Hygiene Baccalaureate Degree CompletionProgram and Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinator. She hasserved as Director of the Dental Hygiene Program since1998 and was promoted to Associate Professor and Directorof Outcomes Assessment in 2001. Prof. Shepherd willremain as Director of the Dental Hygiene Program. UnderProfessor Shepherd’s leadership we look forward to evenmore success in the areas of assessment, curriculummanagement and teaching and learning enhancements.Congratulations!The following faculty were promoted effectiveJuly 1, 2009:Leyvee Lynn L.
