ADEAUDM a Big Presence at ADEA Annual SessionDiane C. Hoelscher, DDS’89, MSChair, Department of Patient ManagementImagine a dental school with engaged, informedand energized faculty who understand importantissues in dentistry, utilizing leading edge educationalmethods and working with students whoare interested not only in dentistry, but also inthe process of their own education. That schoolis your alma mater and every year, in the spring,UDM faculty, staff and students gather to learnand network with others from across the countryat the American Dental Education Association(ADEA) Annual Session. ADEA is considered the“Voice of Dental Education” and represents andserves the dental education community.UDM has a long history of active involvementin ADEA. This year 22 faculty and five studentsattended the Annual Session in Phoenix. As aresult of their participation, faculty returninvigorated and eager to implement new ideasgleaned from the meeting. The emphasis onenvisioning the future of dental and allied dentaleducation and looking at possibilities reflects theoutlook of many faculty and students at the Schoolof Dentistry. For faculty, it’s encouraging andempowering to know there are others who are onthe same journey. As Dr. Steve Reynolds (DDS’78),a part-time faculty member who attended themeeting for the first time states, “There was a real sense of camaraderieand exchange of ideas and techniques. I really felt like a member of abigger community and that that community had a great awareness ofdirection and commitment.”We are very proud of UDM faculty participation at the Annual Session.Six faculty presented posters of research or program developmentsand one faculty member presented a lunch and learn session. faculty organized or participated insymposia or section programs. Dr.Choong Foong and Professor KimWerth (RDH’82) served as sectionchairpersons and I serve on the ADEABoard of Directors as Vice Presidentfor Faculties. Congratulations toDr. Dincer Gurun (DDS’03), whocelebrated his graduation from theyear-long Leadership Institute, andbest wishes to Dr. Michelle Wheaterwho began the Leadership Instituteduring Annual Session.More recently, students have realizedthe value of participation in ADEAand have established a student ADEAchapter, which was recognized at thepast two Annual Sessions for chapterimprovement and growth. Studentinvolvement in dental education iskey to the vitality of the School ofDentistry and we appreciate theiractive interest and contributions.ADEA and the Annual Session definitelysupport the great things happeningat the School of Dentistry.
