69THE <strong>LOST</strong> SIMPLE MACHINES LESSONIntroduction:Among the six lost lessons, the simple machinesdemonstration was most rudimentary. Perhaps, it is because mostearth-based simple machines are crafted to overcome the handicap ofgravity. In space, without the effect of gravity, no difficulty inpushing, pulling, lifting, or rotating the most massive articles isencountered. However, there remain significant uses for simplemachines, even in space. The challenge of the simple machines lostlesson was to demonstrate how they might be used in a zero-g spaceenvironment. Even without gravity, the principles of Newton’saction/reaction laws call for simple machines to accommodatecertain activities. For example, astronauts had exercised onstationary pedal type bikes during the Skylab Programs. Though thebike wheel did not transport the user on a path about the lab’sinterior, there was the mechanical advantage of pedal-leveragerotating the wheel. By applying resistance via a brakingmechanism, the amount of effort (work) the astronaut performed inexercising could be adjusted.
